Power that Keeps Up
When it’s time to power up, get a full hour of play time from just ten minutes of plug-in time. Need to recharge on the go? Just stick your Gear IconX in the carrying case. With its own integrated battery, the case packs nearly another full charge.
Tap. Swipe. Speak.
Tap or swipe your earbuds to switch to the next song, answer a call and turn on ambient sound. Or just speak commands via Bixby or Google Voice. And when you take out your earbuds, the music automatically stops playing.
Can I customize Gear IconX to fit my ear?

If you really think about it, not having full, robust, and total control from a phone - Android or iPhone - is irrelevant. Not being able to upload songs directly from an iPhone is irrelevant. The best way to upload songs to these is from a PC, i.e. without a phone. Not being able to have "full" control from an Android or iPhone is irrelevant. The best way to control these is from the touch interface, i.e. without a phone. Not being able to use Bixby on an iPhone is irrelevant. Bixby needs internet and ties you to a phone, which is what you are supposed to be getting away from. If any of your complaints are I wish it would work better with my phone, then your complaint is irrelevant. You are supposed to get away from the phone with these.
Having said all that, the sound quality is above average for ear bud style headphones. The sound is crisp and clean whether via bluetooth or onboard music. The bass is lacking, yes, that is true. But, compared to other similar type headsets, it is at least on par. Overall, the sound is 4/5 compared to other ear buds I have tried.
Bluetooth wireless range is the best I have seen in similar products. I have had cheap wireless earbuds that disconnected 3 feet away. These are full on bluetooth range. If they are cutting out, its the other end of the Bluetooth connection at fault. Its not these earbuds, they are solid. You can transfer songs via Bluetooth, but I believe it has to be one at a time. This is tedious. Again, you are better off using the PC. Connection range and strength 5/5.
Control via hardware is fine. It does take a little practice, but it is better than adequate. Again, the whole point is to get away from the phone. I do wish you could control the songs onboard via a watch. You can stream from a watch and control that just fine. I do not think it is a big ask to be able to control the onboard songs via a watch (certainly from a Samsung watch). Part of the pitch with these is that they are workout ready. I dont want to have my phone when working out (although you can control the onboard songs via the phone). However, I do wear my watch (also pitched for workouts). Only makes sense that the Icon X and (Samsung) watches play better together. I hope they add this feature in the future. Controls 4/5.
Battery life is more than adequate (2018 version) for the intended use. These are not meant to be all day wear. These are meant to be for occasional use. Primarily these are for workouts. When kept in the included charging box (which is highly recommended), these are good for 7 days or more of workouts without having to recharge the box. In this context, no one has a legitimate complaint about battery life. All week battery life for workouts is really way more than anyone can ask. Battery life 5/5.
Comfort is really going to depend on your ear. Everyone has different ears. I found that the ear canal part was fine out of the box. I did change the other piece to the smaller set. I think they fit rather well, again, considering that these are for shorter term use. Comfort 4/5.
The onboard storage is waaaaaay more than needed. Honestly, you dont want more than a couple hundred songs on board at most. I find that 60-75 songs work best. Again, I want this experience to be simple and easy to use without the phone. Too many songs can be a burden to scroll through and find that one song you want to hear right now. Do yourself a favor and dont try to load your entire library on board. Just keep your favorites on the buds. It is better to have bulk storage on a watch (or phone if you want to have that on you for workouts), as it is much easier to find and play songs in a large catalog on these. Storage 5/5.
Final thoughts. If you understand this product and how to best use it, it is hard to deny that Samsung has hit a homerun with these. They have it where it counts. If you are an audiophile, these are not for you. If you want to have and control huge libraries of music, these are not for you. If you want all day every day wear, these are not for you. If you insist on doing everything from a phone, these are not for you. But within a certain space for a certain user, these are the best on the market. Yes, they are pricey. I feel that these should be closer to $100 mainly because these definitely purpose, and not something you will want to use all the time in every situation. Overall 4.5/5.
Over 3 months they have fallen from 3 stars to 2 and now one, It would be zero, but you cannot give that. They are basically useless now. They are constantly disconnecting or pausing automatically, the mesh screen for the earbuds has to be replaced every 2 weeks otherwise one of the earbuds will lose 50% volume, they no longer pause when I hit the earbud, or I have trouble skipping the songs, now that the weather is warming up and I no longer need a hat; thus, they often fall out of my ears and as for staying in the ears when running or any activity where I'm moving often, they fall out - the only time they seem to stay in my ear seems to be when I'm cycling. These are basically worth 50 dollars, no more. Do not buy. Too many problems after 3 months to make them worth it.
I took a chance with these, despite the moderate reviews, and took a hit. It was between these and the Jabra 65t sport, but these had a bit better reviews concerning connection. There are many on the market now with a small charging case and totally wireless, so not many points there. Points go to connectivity, speaker quality, whether they stay in the ear, and extra features.
Pros: The only reason for 2 stars v. 0 stars is sound quality is good for music and for talking on the phone. I'm even on my phone with my balaclava and people still hear me very well. I like the sport features too and of course, totally wireless and a small charging case. They have stayed in my ears fairly well, but have still managed to fall out. I think foam earbuds work the best for earbuds, but they crumble apart after a couple of weeks, so it's a toss up between the two. They do work well when changing the volume up or down with swiping up or down on the earbud itself. I like that the case charges by USB type C, as I think this is where everything is going, so something universal like that is helpful.
CONS: Though there are good features, I'm very upset with customer service and the performance of the headphones. First, after ONLY 2 WEEKS the right side has lost about 50% volume control, but since these were bought for me in the USA during Christmas, but I work and live abroad (Netherlands), all Amazon (Whose more willing to work with me than Samsung) is willing to do is make me pay for return shipping, which will be around $20, then they will ship a new pair to my address in the US and I must have them shipped over here, another $20, plus I have waiting time and the large possibility that the second pair will be worse than the first, or they will refund my money if I ship the headphones back to them, again, I pay for the shipping. I can then buy them over here in the Netherlands where they are a lot more expensive. But Amazon's response was better than Samsung who will not do anything for me since they were purchased in the US and they say the parts are different over here in the Netherlands. The other issue is that the buttons have to be mashed down pretty hard to do things like pause the headphones or skip the track.
I use headphones daily since I don't have a car, but I ride my bike everywhere and exercise with headphones. (I'm still happy with the Note 9 and the Samsung Gear Pro 2, but very dissatisfied with my IconX 2018 earbuds. With the price tag, any issues that they have should be minor or should not occur until after at least a year. (I had the Jaybirds X2 Which lasted me about 2 years until suddenly dying, but they worked great, except for the foam ear pieces which all fell apart after only 2 weeks, but at least no problems with charging, connectivity or volume, or clarity.)
The world is not small anymore and people travel, work internationally much more than in the past. A large company like Samsung should cater more to international customers. Lenovo is even worse, but then again, they are Chinese, so to be expected.
