Was looking for a pair to compliment my 2 wired speakers on one end of my outdoor deck...so I needed wireless. Unfortunately, these are not outdoor/weatherproof and I need to bring them in and out each time I use them. They must be plugged into an electrical outlet. I wanted a rechargeable version, but could not find wireless (WiFi)+rechargeable+reasonable cost+weatherproof+reasonable size.
After weeks of research, what I can share is this: Bluetooth speakers have limited range from the source device, can be reasonably priced, can be rechargeable, can be linked to create stereo...however, Wireless can stretch farther, but...wireless speakers generally are proprietary technology at this time.
Yamaha (MusicCast), Sonos are well rated brands for WiFi but require a specific amp/device to push the sound. Sonos cannot push to MusicCast and vice versa. So part of my decision was to consider a move of everything in my ecosystem to Sonos vs. Yamaha. In the end, cost was better in the overall upgraded Yamaha receiver system (which I needed for my 4k TV) with the features I wanted (2-zone control) vs. an old receiver with a Sonos amp attached (same cost as new MusicCast capable receiver).
When combining wireless and wired systems, there is some complexity as you are dealing with signal latency between wireless (slower) Vs. wired (faster) communications. In my Yamaha systems, it worked out of the box.
I also purchased the Vebos stands for these. They look great and having the sound lifted 36" off the deck (about ear height when seated) really enhances the sound. These would be great on an end table or in a corner of the room to fill in sound.
These are compatible with my 7.2 setup and I could add them as front or mid-room speakers but I have not tried that yet.
MusicCast is easy enough to setup and use. Is it the best application design? Most user friendly? No and No. But I know how to make it work and was able to add to family iPad and devices so they can control easily as well.
Highly recommend these.
I used to have full-size speakers tower in the rear but then we got a German Shepherd. As she got bigger she accidentally knocked one of my rear speakers over in my living room. I knew I couldn't prevent the dog from going there so I moved the speakers to another room and went without rear speakers. Then I saw these and waited for a nice price drop to buy them so I could wall mount them where the dog couldn't knock them over.
Setup wasn't the easiest thing. I had read of others troubles so I knew right out of the gate to connect these with Ethernet, add to the app, update the firmware, find the speaker's IP on my network and access it via a web browser, configure the wireless settings and save them, disconnect the Ethernet, reboot the speaker to get it connected to my wireless, then configure them for surround via the app. If you think you can work your way through that then I think you'll be happy with these as surrounds.
I haven't had any problems and they sound good as a surround speaker. I haven't noticed any jittering or odd delays or incorrect sounds. They weren't the easiest thing to configure but since I have they have been hands-off and just work with the receiver controlling everything.
Overall I would recommend these because even though difficult to configure there isn't another wireless rear surround solution that works as smoothly with the Yamaha receiver once configured.
