First, delivery took 2 days less than the seller projected. It was on my front door step when I got home from work. I was able to carry it upstairs and set it up myself (I am 6'2" male, 195 lbs). From the moment I began taking it out of the box until it was set up and playing a DVD via my PS4 was under 10 minutes. Don't get me wrong - this TV is heavy - but not beyond my abilities.
This is not a 'smart' TV and the remote does not look snazzy. Those are the only two drawbacks I imagine anyone could note. For me, these are not drawbacks:
1. I specifically wanted a television that was not smart. I enjoy my Apple TV, Amazon Cube and Fire TV, Google Chromecast, and Roku. I believe this technology is in a constant cycle of improvement. If it was built into the television then I could not stay abreast of the most up-to-date technologies.
2. The remote is completely functional. I have had 3 Harmony remotes over the past 10 years. They do not function completely effectively for my set-up though. Perhaps I over-complicate my A/V? I have 10 HDMI items, coaxial cables, 7.1 surround sound, Xbox and Playstation and Nintendo 64, etc. With approximately 20 items in total connected to the television through various means I have made a decision to go 'old school' from now on when it comes to remotes. And I'm glad I am doing it this way! Things are actually simpler with an 'old school' remote that functions well.
Now for the positives:
1. The picture - Wow! All pixels were perfect upon delivery and remain perfect one week into heavy usage. It is markedly superior to my 55" Sony Plasma, 55" Samsung LED, 92" Mitsubishi, or 32" Samsung. 4k? Definitely! This is an awesome picture that cannot be underestimated!
2. The sound? I see others have complained. I find the sound fine for movies and television (Amazon Prime, Netflix, MBL-TV). I do not note a discernible difference between this TV or my other televisions. I did hook up a Samsung sound bar and subwoofer. Obviously, that is better than what the TV came with. And it doesn't compare to the 7.1 Harman Kardon surround sound hooked up to my 92" Mitsubishi. But there is no real need for a sound bar or subwoofer unless you are an audiophile or want the room to shake.
3. Ease of set-up: This is as simple as any other television. I do excel in A/V due to my daily work environment, but I can't imagine this would test anyone's abilities. This is as simple a TV to set up as they come.
Bottom line: 1) The picture is amazing; 2) The sound is fine; 3) Set-up is simple; 4) Finally, price...this is the best bang for the buck available ANYWHERE. I was able to get this TV for $469. That is incredible in my opinion given the quality and ease of use.
This item was exactly what I wanted!
My only issues are the remote control. It is very cheap and does not work properly. Can someone recommend a brand of universal remote that will work with this TV? I emailed Customer Service and they just want to sell me another one of theirs, which I don't want.
Second is the sound. It is ok, but not great. I am not familiar with sound bars. Can someone tell me how they work and how you connect them to this TV? Also recommend a brand.
Again, for around $400, it's a good TV.
1) Great picture. . when it works!
2) Plenty of inputs available (read below for input socket problems)
3) Customer service responds reasonably well to inquiries by phone. . however, the response to e-mail correspondence is spotty at best.
What's wrong [For each problem listed below, I am able to check reception or the "condition" on THREE other TV sets in the house; and, virtually every time the Sceptre goes on the blink, the other sets are working fine! The other sets are Samsung HDTV's that are 3 ys, 4 yrs; and, 5 yrs old]:
1) Tuner will NOT "hold" channels. . .Often, I have to re-scan for available channels two or three times within an hour!
2) Input sockets are NOT fastened adequately to the chassis. Often (sometimes EACH time I turn the set on) I have to "jiggle" the plug-in cable to make contact. This happens on several of the sockets (sometimes the SAME socket; sometimes another socket. . within a period of 5-10 minutes)
3) Tuner not only "drops" channels; but, loses them ENTIRELY and they cannot be retrieved for a day or two !
4) Three months after purchase, I began to experience the "channel dropping" regularly. . Too often to "put up with". . .And, I contacted Sceptre. However, I had to return the set to them in THE EXACT SHIPPING CONTAINER THAT THE SET ORIGINALLY CAME IN. And, I had to wait for two weeks until they sent me an "Original Equipment" container (They refused to send me "instructions" on where and how to place the various pieces of styrofoam "blocks"). Sceptre paid for the return shipping; however, this involved another two weeks. . .And, after another week or so, I received a "new" set (the replacement set had a different serial number than my original set . .But, considering the problems that began to occur shortly after receiving the "new" set, they MIGHT have sent me a "refurbished" or, a "used" set . . .Because, within a few weeks, I began having the same tuner problems. . .And, that is when I noticed the "loose socket" problem described above.
5) There is a way to "toggle" between two channels; however, often the set will "forget" the "other channel" that you are toggling. Very frustrating because you never know whether it has "lost the toggle" or, it has "dropped the channel" which requires a complete re-scan of ALL the channels. And, you have to re-scan MANUALLY all the channels the scan has revealed . . many of which you do not want.
Sceptre does NOT allow a local service shop to make repairs, etc. .BECAUSE IT WILL VOID THE WARRANTY!!! And, with THIS set, you will NEED THAT WARRANTY!!! [I purchased an "extended warranty" contract, however, it does not "kick in" until the original manufacturer's warranty expires in one year]
There may be other problems that I don't yet know about. . .I only had the first set for three months; and, the "new" set for two months. . But, I'll be surprised if I don't have other problems before the first year is up!
