Pros:
- Wireless: I didn't mind a cable before I started using this keyboard. Now I wonder how I used to live with the wired keyboard. Yes, it's a trivial thing but it's liberating. If you have to do some quick paperwork, you can just put aside the keyboard anywhere. On your second desk, on your lap, on a chair, on a floor, leave it with your cat, or lean it against the wall, you name it. The wireless feature makes quite a difference especially when your desk surface has a limited space.
-Response time: I do not notice any difference between the keyboard on my laptop and this keyboard (I type at around 50 wpm).
-No touch pad: I always disable the touch pad as I only use the TrackPoint. This keyboard does not come with the touch pad in the first place (although this could be a drawback for some users).
-Long battery life: I barely have to charge the keyboard. I use mine almost everyday but I only have to charge it once in two to three months, tops.
Cons:
-Connection: Sometimes the connection gets lost for 20 to 30 seconds. This happens probably once in two days or so. This doesn't bug me much though.
-Awkward key locations: Some key arrangements are pretty unreasonable. This is not this keyboard's problem but rather new ThinkPad keyboards in general. You would like to reserve convenient, easily accessible locations for the keys that you use often (like a space bar or Alt key) and put less frequently used keys to the perimeter (like Insert key). For some reason, PrtSc key takes up the prime location between the right Alt and Ctrl, and Delete is placed further to the top right (even further away from Insert). I use PrtSc probably once in six months, and Delete way more often than that. Everyone has their preferences but if you are as irritated as I am, you can install Sharpkeys to swap keys (I swap Delete with CapsLock and PrtSc with Backspace). Also, PgUp and PgDn are located right above the left and right keys. From time to time I accidentally pressed them when I meant to press the arrow keys. This, I have to live with.
-No dedicated mute button: There is no dedicated volume or mute button. You'll need to press Fn and F1, F2 or F3 for that. When you playing your music loud and your coworkers stop by your office, a dedicated mute button would shorten an awkward moment before you shut down your music. It's a bit hard to locate Fn AND F1 in a snap.
I see that some reviewers comment on the range. I use my keyboard usually within 3 feet or so. I really can't see what's on the screen if I go any farther anyway. For any practical purposes, the keyboard has a sufficient range (unless you would like to use the keyboard as a remote controller).
All in all, a pretty good keyboard.
I needed a wireless keyboard because my self-built PC is plugged into my 60 inch TV in my studio apartment. I don't use my PC for gaming so I chose this specific keyboard for 3 main reasons.
1. Trackpoint. And its a 2 in 1 devise. Using a standard mouse, wireless or not, is a horrible experience when using it on a sofa or a clear glass coffee table. You can't beat pulling out a keyboard that sits comfortably in the middle of your lap. Also Trackpoint FTW! Mouse movements on trackpoints have a very high learning curve and a lot of people hate it but its perfect for someone like me. The trick is NOT to press on the trackpoint like it is a button. If you are willing to put in the time to get used to it (I have my mouse speed on max) then you'll realize it is one of the better option when using a PC while sitting at your living room sofa.
2. Lenovo standard keyboard layout. Its the perfect quality design and it sits exactly in the middle of my lap. For example, most other mouse-keyboard combos would have a trackpad on the right side of the keyboard. Those other options made for uncomfortable lap typing since my arms had to learn toward the left of my lap to type. Also this is a standard Lenovo keyboard layout. I am very particular about the layout of my keys so I can't settle for just any keyboard. I would have given this a 5 star review if it wasn't for....
3. Bluetooth. I needed a Bluetooth to future proof. I built my PC from scratch and installed a Wireless PCI adapter that had a Bluetooth receiver in it. Great for not having to use up a USB slot like with other wireless options. I also liked the idea that I can connect this keyboard to phones and tablets as well as other PC's or laptops that have Bluetooth in it. One small negative is that the USB port is only for charging the keyboard meaning whatever your using has to have Bluetooth.
Now as for the Bluetooth in the keyboard. It was essentially broken upon my first use. Worked perfectly with laptops, Android cell phone and tablets, but not my PC. If I walked more that 3 feet away from my PC, I would get a very laggy mouse pointer. A month of trial and error with the same results. An automatic 1 of 5 star review. HOWEVER, I was using a glass coffee table with huge, thick metal legs. Coincidentally I replaced glass and metal table with an all wood one and tried the keyboard again. Instant success! The Bluetooth range would reach my entire apartment with zero lag. 5 out of 5 stars! I have been regularly using this keyboard for at 3 months without issues.
Long story short, I believe other reviewers when they say that it did not work for them. You have to check your environment for interference. Metal tends to block the bluetooth signal. Also not to get too technical on you, but USB 3.0 wiring, wireless routers, and the way you built your PC can make or break the way this keyboard and your devise works. Google is your friend and do some research.
Now the reason why I gave this only 4 stars is because the Bluetooth chip inside does not match the quality of the keyboard. I have had a Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii, Xbox One and Playstation 4, which all use Bluetooth controllers and works perfectly without interference, even with the glass coffee table with the metal legs that caused interference with this keyboard. Since 2006 those Bluetooth technologies are perfect. Some blame has to go to Lenovo for not releasing something that works under all scenarios and environments.
If you get the Bluetooth in this keyboard working for you then it will be the best product in the world far exceeding its nearest competitor. (I have written and edited this entire review with this keyboard with zero lag). But if you cant get it to work then obviously this keyboard is complete trash and a waste of your money. Now you know why your mileage may vary.
Top reviews from other countries
- Logitech full size mx5500 keyboard and mouse (too bulky and heavy)
- Logitech Dinovo mini keyboard and mouse (mouse is great, but keyboard is slow to type on
- Now this (slim, great to type on, and decent trackpad)
This has solved what I was looking for. The keyboard is fantastic, and the trackpad isn't bad once you get used to it. I know others have complained about the range and in my situation it is about 2 meters away from the HTPC.. no issues. I am very happy. I finally feel like I have the ultimate companion for my HTPC after six years!
Pros:
+ Has F-keys, unlike most travel keyboards,
+ Keys have decent spacing and travel,
+ Trackpoint works as a great mouse substitute for instances where you can't carry one,
+ micro USB charger cable (common cable, ships with one that has a velcro cable-tie/strap),
+ NFC pairing (works great on my Nexus. You still need to punch in the pairing number, though...),
+ Has feet like a regular keyboard.
Cons:
- Battery non-removable/replaceable,
- LED and switch design not very straightforward. Has a single green LED for power/Bluetooth, another green LED for charging, and a slide/hold switch for power,
- Can only be paired to one device at a time (constant unpairing and re-pairing if you want to switch between devices),
- Reversed Fn and Ctrl (but this is typical of Lenovo),
- You need to press Fn to access the function keys (like some of those multimedia keyboards),
- No wired USB mode (micro-USB is for charging only).
Other comments:
= Keyboard isn't detected very fast by the Dell Venue 8 Pro, but pretty fast on my Nexus 7 (2013),
= Range is fine. I can get 10m easy on my Nexus 5 with this and it still works. Anyone having problems with Bluetooth probably has some sort of issue with their Bluetooth transceiver (ex: desktops using BT should not have their BT dongle on the back of the PC, laptops sometimes have a lot more interference that makes BT's range less, possibly lots of local interference if you live downtown, etc.)
The bigger issue is that this keyboard constantly loses its connection - often for about 10 seconds - but sometimes less and sometimes much longer. I have tried re-pairing it many times and playing with drivers, but no luck. So I have had to go back to my Logitech B810. Although I do not like the feel or layout of the B810 as much as the ThinkPad keyboard, the B810 never loses its connection. It doesn't seem to be the specific item either because my colleague bought one at the same time and has had the same problem and has also given up.
Regarding the second one, I noticed two differences, when compared to my first keyboard.
The bluetooth range, that now seems to be better, and reach further. Also, the keystroke feel and key material, that now feels slightly harder to press and the material key quality than doesn't seem as good as the previous one.
Anyhow, I am very happy with my second keyboard, and I still highly recommend this peace of hardware.
