My last Wear OS watch was the Huawei Watch 2 and I got a full 2 years of use out of that one. Towards the end, it started to act up but that coincided with the release of the Gen 5 and the subsequent sale on Black Friday. I was waiting for that to happen, hoping to eek out a few more days and weeks from my Huawei watch.
So far, I've only had my Gen 5 for a couple of days. It's hard to say how the battery life is after just those 2 days but I can say this. The watch charges fast. Real fast. I was at 58% yesterday and I set it on the charger before I went to wash up for bed. By the time I got back to the watch, it was fully charged. That was maybe 30 minutes. So I took the watch off the charger and I set it aside to see what the battery power would look like in the morning. Not too shabby...it was at 91% this morning when I put it on.
The Huawei watch had 768MB of ram (IF memory serves correctly) but even with that, Wear OS was still sort of slow and glitchy. The 1GB on the Gen 5 definitely makes a difference. It still has moments when it glitches and slows a little but it's a lot better. I don't have nearly as many moments. The watch is much more responsive and I think I will enjoy getting Google Pay back. For the most part, I would have to say the Gen 5 is very smooth and responsive. Coming from those other watches, I have nothing to complain about.
Just a comparison...I also recently bought my wife a Samsung Galaxy watch. Yes, I went to Samsung for her but she also owns a Samsung phone and doesn't have the same feelings about Samsung as I. She started using it on Friday and even though she is happy with it overall, her battery isn't doing any better than my Gen 5. She did get the smaller 42mm version with the smaller battery but I've seen numerous reviews about it saying that they get about 2&1/2 days to even 3 days out of a charge. The wife might swing 1&1/2 days which is on par with what I'm seeing with the Gen 5. But I can say one thing...helping her setup of the Tizen OS based watch made me want to stick with my familiar Wear OS watch even more. You can't undo 4+ years of familiarity with a particular brand.
About the Gen 5, I really like the big main button with the spinning dial. The galaxy watch has the spinning bezel. This has the spinning dial and I think I like that more than the spinning bezel. Google assistant pulls up fast and it listens pretty well. I was having some issues having it text my wife but that's something I'll check on further. But at least between my phone and my watch, if I need to rattle off a quick message to someone while driving, I can voice activate things and speak my message and get it done that way without taking my attention off the road.
So far, this watch has been everything that I wanted and hoped for. I haven't tested the watch in water yet and I might not do that anytime too soon as I don't hit the water too often. But I'm sure it's better than my Huawei watch and I took that into the pool a few times.
From having my eye on this watch since it was announced to seeing it in store at a Fossil in Vegas and to finally getting it on my wrist, I can honestly say that this is the best Wear OS has to offer. Fossil makes most of the watches with wear os. The Emporio Armani Smartwatch 3 is a nice looking watch and it was just announced but I don't think it's worth the extra money. The Gen 5 I think looks like a very nice watch. It can work in any situation. Much more versatile than my Huawei watch 2.
Update: I can definitely confirm that I love my gen 5. I've had it for a couple of weeks now. It feels so familiar to me but it runs so much smoother than all the previous watches. The battery life gets me a full day without any trouble. I'm using a watch face off the play store that gives me options to show on the screen. But even with this face and constant notifications all day, I'm somewhere between 45-60% after 16 hours. I could probably eek out 2 days in some situations but I'm an overnight charging person anyways so why bother trying for it... This is the best of wear os until the new chip gets released and maybe, something from Google gets released now that they own fitbit.
Setup went easy and I had it running/synced in minutes. The smoked stainless looks very classy, much better than the cheap, plasticky look of many of these devices. There was plenty room in the bracelet even with my thick wrist - I ended up pulling two links (doable, but not very easy).
I was initially disappointed with the size of the digital display font despite the large face, and none of the options on the WearOS app seemed to be "just right". In addition, the battery life was not great for the first couple of days. It took me some doing, but I found a free face on a third party app that looks and works terrific, plus it seems to have extended the battery life. I can go 18+ hours on a full charge with the ambient display and BT on, however the charger works very quickly - popping on the charger for even a few minutes can add several hours.
It's grown on me over the past few weeks and I am finding it very convenient to simply glance at it to see if the email/text is worth immediate attention. Sending quick SMS/email replies is simple, either with the suggestions or (amazingly) the tiny keyboard. Also, I get an SMS for dual layer authentication at work,12+ times a day, so that alone makes it very useful. The speakerphone is OK only if you have HD voice. I've toyed with some of the apps like Fit and Cardiogram. They seem to do what they're supposed to do, but I was really in for the productivity. About the only complaint I have is the size of the crown/main button. It's quite large and easy to press, so it's easy to accidentally depress any time I bend my wrist back, though wearing it a little higher on the wrist has helped.
I'll edit if anything notable pops up, but for now I'll say that this was a very good choice at the price point.
Top reviews from other countries
Very happy with the purchase. The only thing i would redesign is the extruding buttons. When bending your wrist upwards, the extruding buttons get pressed inadvertently. Google Assistant gets activated, but it is a minor nuisance. Overall, very pleased with this watch.
+ve
* looks are subjective but it is more like a traditional watch and matches with almost all outfits
* easy to swap watch bands
* the os till date has not hanged and is smooth
* charhing time from 0 to 100% is about an hour which is pretty good
-ve
* this is a strictly 1 day watch so need to charge everyday and that too in custom mode.
If daily mode is used it is a strictly 15 hr watch
* sometimes the watch just refuses to connect to the internet. This it seems is an OS issue.
* sometimes messages just do not give the vibration feedback. Restarting solves the problem

For a small watch they packed it in a big carton as big as the ones used to store mangoes.🤣
My requirements were - The watch should be supported by Google,
Should have functions like a Speaker to recieve calls and call someone,
and should be able to play music,
Also should have Speech to text feature in it. Also have google assistant in it,
Never wanted Bixby hence did not go for a samsung gear.
I dont like wearing my watch while working out and find it distracting hence never searched for a Fit watch.
So i suggest prior to buying or investing your money , make a list of your requirements and see if you actually need it or not.
Pros about the watch-
Call Quality - perfect.
wifi Bluetooth Connections - Great - found no issues.
looks Rich and quite big.
Get an 8Gb storage in it and can store music, Also download playstore apps for it which i loved although its all due to WEAR OS.
Google assistant works smoothly in it.
at 1st it had some glitches so i had to reset the watch and after that it's now working fine.
Its like a phone on your hand simple.
Cons -
Battery life - that's a little too harsh and drains quite quickly. but that's if your apps installed are running, or the other features are kept on.
The firmware- got a software update instantly but found that there's a minor slowdown there in the fluidity of the watch interface but nonetheless it hardly is noticeable.
Other than this i found it to be perfect and worth it's money.
if you have the money go for it, dont think twice.
Samsung gears offer much lesser festures in this price so think about it🙂
