From the manufacturer
Sennheiser HD 660S
The powerhouse open-back headphone.
Connects you to the deepest corners of your music collection.
A direct connection to your music
Known for their engaging signatures and liquid-smooth response, HD 660S predecessors HD 650 and HD 600 shattered performance barriers in the audiophile headphone category.
The HD 660S transcends the best of that storied DNA with supernatural speed and effortless instrument reproduction—even at the bookends of the frequency spectrum. Utilizing an all-new transducer and specially ventilated drive unit, the HD 660S delivers the revealing, tack-sharp detail audiophiles demand without sacrificing the engaging dynamics that make music so enjoyable.
From our ears to yours
In just one listen you will understand why the HD 660S is so special. Thousands of listening sessions later its purpose is even clearer.
What you hear each and every time is the result of an open-back earcup mated to a new transducer tuned for the modern audiophile. Its speedy response is perfectly suited for reproducing those frequency-stretching recordings with confidence. Thanks to an aluminum voice coil, the 38mm diaphragm remains nimble for ultra-quick impulse fidelity across the board. This activation and rest behaviour unlocks the capability to communicate tonal and spatial characteristics precisely.
Meshing together
The steel mesh found on the HD 660S drive unit is interesting in design but most impressive when it comes to performance.
It completes the ventilated driver, offering consistent control of air displacement to reduce turbulence. As a result, diaphragm travel is pure, letting the music—and only the music—shine in a perfect balance of integrity and expression. The steel composition allows for much tighter production tolerances, ultimately contributing to remarkably consistent characteristics of each HD 660S produced. When combined with the open-back earcups, the sound emanating from each transducer is completely free to expand, just as it would in nature.
Capability, meet versatility
Today’s audiophile has more component choices than ever.
We optimized the HD 660S for efficiency on a wider range of devices to accommodate the varying levels of power present in output amplification circuitry. At 150 ohms, the HD 660S is the perfect partner for dedicated amplifiers, A/V receivers, and digital audio players (DAPs)—the magnet is more powerful than its predecessors, and thus easier to drive regardless of how your setup changes over time.
We also packed your HD 660S with a versatile set of essential cables, each one impedance-matched with ultra-low capacitance.

When I put them on, they clamped firmly-but-comfortably to my head, all the way around my ears. Since they're open-back, I can hear everything in my room, which makes it feel a lot more personal, almost more like a concert.
I started listening to TOOL, and immediately had to lay down on my bed to absorb the experience. There's no way I can use these headphones casually, they're meant for a focused enjoyment of the songs you play. I went through my library, experimenting with different genres. I found that they reward you greatly for clear, high-end music such as TOOL, Pink Floyd, non-bass-heavy EDM, soundtracks, classical, jazz... the list goes on.
What they aren't meant for is bass-heavy rock, hip-hop, edm, pop, etc. Since they're open-back, they really don't resonate well and the bass is quite weak.
I found that I could play them fine off my iPhone with a converter dongle and the Dolby-Atmos high-res songs. I was thinking about getting a new DAC to try providing more power for bass, but at the moment, they work fine.
Pros:
-Sound quality and clarity that hits way above its price point
-Great storage case
-Multiple dongles and wires for different configurations and uses
-Comfortable
-Excellent build quality
Cons:
-Weak bass
-Due to the weak bass, doesn't play some genres well, such as hiphop, EDM, etc (but I've found this to be song-specific. It doesn't like Parkway Drive's harder songs, but it loves 'Cemetery Bloom' since it's gentler)
Would I buy again?
-Yes, but if I want to experience all song genres, I may invest into a headphone DAC.
We can’t really talk about the 660 S without talking about the 650. I had the HD 650 back from 2013 to 2016 until I finally sold them. The HD 650 are top notch headphones, but I switched over to the X2s at the time. I don’t regret the choice. The HD 650s need a lot of power and the X2s at the time had very little competition in the $300 segment. They had more soundstage and bass. The HD 650s, which the HD 660 S is attempting to dethrone here, is an absolute monster of a headphone. The 650s offer a fatigueless experience and have basically no major flaws. True for it's time. Then I got the 660 S!
The 660 S is the better headphone. It’s easier to drive first of all. Many of you may not even know what Ohms and sensitivity are. Let's say the 660 S is in many cases 30-40% louder on the same equipment. The 660 S can do everything the 650 and 600 do much better. Don’t let anyone trick you on this. It’s better – in every way. Through some sort of magical engineering, the 660 S takes the 650s top end veil off, without bringing up the highs. In fact, the highs are even further recessed on the 660 S. Don’t let this pull you back. All the details are there. Unless you’re a huge fan of V shaped headphones, you won’t find something better under $500 than this. That’s just how it is. You have to accept it. This is S tier all over the place. Let’s talk further about sound. I’m going to be brief.
The 660 S are the smoothest headphones I’ve ever heard. Highs, bass, and mids are absolutely and completely balanced. Bass is punchy, accurate, and present. Mids are, of course, the highlight of the 600 series and here you are getting the best mids nearly of any headphone unless you step up humongous amounts of $. The soundstage is fantastic. It’s not too wide or too narrow. It’s just right. Where these really shine is the treble for me. These present fatigueless, milky smooth, crystal clear, purely magical, ear soothing, and perfectly accurate highs. These are a 9.5/10 headphone and S tier. You can’t beat these even if you pay $500. If you can get them for less than $500 then you are getting the best deal of your life in headphones.
They are significantly better than the 650. We aren’t talking a little here. There’s a huge jump of at least 30% in clarity and imaging. Huge. I bought these and the Fiio K5 Pro. I’ve never heard sound so good in my life and I used the Creative Z with the HD 650s for years. As soon as I put these on and listened even for a little bit, I was floored by what I was getting. I said the highs were the best part right? The IMAGING!! What the heck? Let me tell you I listen to music from video game OSTs more than really anything. Wow. Incredible. This will show you details in something as old as SNES music that you never even knew existed. The imaging on these has to be some of the best in the entire world. Sounds pop up all around you and it doesn’t just sound like two speakers hitting your ears. Phenomenal imaging. They sound so clear. If you’re on the fence like I was, just get these. Do it! They’re glorious. They’re glorious with any DAC assuming they have enough power. Yes, my K5 Pro sounds way better than my other DACs, but stepping down into a lower DAC is not a disappointment at all. They’re still top tier and the best.
Yea, I don’t care about all the Sundara & DT 1990 hype. Those two don’t image like these do. If you absolutely must have the bass, then these may disappoint, but if you aren’t a bass head, then these are a no-brainer. I’ll also help you here. If you really can’t justify the pricetag of these, then get the Philips SHP 9500 with the K5 Pro or E10K-TC. This combo will probably be a little cheaper, but it will sound pretty good & similar. The 9500 with the K5 Pro is quite exceptional. You won’t have the milky smooth highs though. But, if you *only* are in need of headphones, then get the 660 S. Do whatever you have to do to get your hands on them.
Here's another tidbit. You can repair the HD 660 S easily with spare HD 650, 600, or 660 S parts. Everything can basically be tool-lessly repaired in the 600 line. It’s extremely supported with cables galore everywhere. The issue with the Sundaras and the 1990s is that they’re not going to have the level of support that the 660 S has. There’s a reason that the 600 series have been going strong since 1997.
The 660 S is the gold standard now and every headphone should be attempting to live up to their magic. Yes, they’re legendary. Yes, the legend continues.
I am by no means an audiophile -- my previous headphones were Turtle Beach. But bought these to upgrade to a more focused and enhanced listening experience, and now I don't think I can ever go back. I paired this with a Fosi Audio Q4 DAC, and the sound quality is extraordinary. I am legit hearing different parts/instruments/backgrounds of songs that I had never heard before in previous hearings, even though I've listened to some of those songs hundreds of times.
They're open-back, so the audio definitely leaks to the outside, but I just sit in my room in the dark at 3am so it doesn't disturb anyone.
Admittedly though, not the most comfortable headsets. They are a little tight, and I thought after a month of use they'd open up a bit and be better. But I also have a rather large head, so I'm not going to remove any points for that. Although compared to my other Sennheiser headsets, definitely more uncomfortable. The only drawback, really.
Top reviews from other countries
The design is similar to the other 600 lines but now with matte black and charcoal paint, the drivers still can be seen from outside. This is very cool. Build from solid, soft-touch plastic, with metal headband and metal cup grills. Very lightweight and comfortable due to having some deep and spacious earpads. Maybe not as premium feeling as those other ones which have more metal components. But those often weigh more than 300g and are more delicate, so there are some trade offs with different materials.
Sound wise, these sounds great with an intimate soundstage. The sound is not technically “flat” but is detailed, natural, and fatigue free. It handles EDM, pop, classical music exceptionally well. In other words, the 660S is the most well-rounded, modernly tuned out of its family of 600, 650, 58X, etc.
Compared to the 660S,
600 is more harsh in the upper mids and drivers are slower in speed and sometimes struggles playing modern music if you listen critically.
650/6XX is a bit chaotic in the lower-mid, kind of warm and less energetic/more laidback overall.
58X has similar tuning to the 660S, but has less detailed and a bit less neutral.
But if your music selection is better suited with those other headphones, you may not need a 660S and save $100-200 (which isn’t a lot considering this could last many years if not for more than a decade)
But honestly speaking, one would be better off purchasing these and just settle with the thinking that those are the endgame for under $1000 range headphone. There is no point, after having the 660s, to then get other pairs from Beyerdynamic, focal, etc, if you are really just trying to enjoy your music collection and not creating a headphone collection. Those absolutely have served me well.
I started with Bose QC 35 then Audio Technica and now finally the Sennheiser HD660S. With just 150 Ohms it can be easily driven by a smart phone however I'll recommend a DAC for optimum output. My suggestion Fiio BTR5 as this also has a 2.5mm balanced output. The HD 660s also come with a pentaconn cable.
I'll end by saying this is the best headphone for home listening and for travelling I'll suggest Audio technica ATHMx50
On sound Quality of the HD 660s good low's the BASS is decent not too overpowering and the Mid 's being excellent in its class, the vocals are awesome, on the high's it's good.
The sound-stage is wide with fantastic imaging.
The only CON that I see is the length of the cables it comes with are very long. Would have been better if there was a 3-4 ft cable as well.
