I like Nintendo, I think they are the best when it comes to Software/Game Design. Their first party games are extremely polished & obsessed with great attention to details.
But when it comes to Hardware, Nintendo is absolute Crap with their Switch hardware, from the console scratching TV Dock to the Horrendous Joy-Cons - which I consider as the worst controller I've ever use in my entire life.
I'm not kidding with you when I consider the Joy-Cons as the worst controller of all time.
I've gone through 2 pairs of Joy-Cons. These are the issues that I have faced during my ownership of those Joy-Cons.
1) ZR button starts acting up. Fixed it by disassemble the Joy-cons & replace the ZR ribbon cable.
2) SL, SR, Sync buttons & LED not working after a year. Turns out that the ribbon cable connecting those part to the Joy-Con motherboard is being bend from the factory. It's an extremely poor design. Fixed it by replacing that particular ribbon cable.
3) Left Joystick starts drifting after a year. Fixed it by replacing the entire joystick. (From those replacement parts from China).
4) Right Directional button starts acting up after more than 50 hours of Super Mario Maker 2 gameplay. This one is the Final Nail in the Coffin - because I can't fix it without replacing the entire Joy-Con motherboard.
At this point, I'm being left with a choice of purchasing another pair of new joy-cons & face the same issues again eventually.
Or I can ditch the horrible Joy-Cons all together & start looking for an alternative.
& I've found the perfect alternative: the HORI Split Pad Pro.
The Daemon X Machina Split Pad Pro comes in Black color with Red accents, I think it matches the Switch tablet console perfectly & looks very cool. The size can be a bit bulky at first, but once you hold it in your hand, you will start to love the extra grip & how comfortable they are to hold.
The button placement makes sense - no more hitting right joystick when pressing B, the D-Pad is amazing & the full size Joysticks are extremely precise without any drifting issues.
Seriously, the Joy-con buttons & joystick is a joke compared to the Split Pad Pro's.
If you are having issues with your Joy-cons, whether it's hardware issues or simply just find them extremely uncomfortable to use. I recommend the Hori Split Pad Pro to you.
Yes, you will sacrifice the Rumble, Wireless bluetooth, Gyro function & NFC if you choose the Split Pad Pro. But in my opinion it's worth it. When you consider just how poorly designed & even worse built the Joy-Cons are.
Those functions mean nothing to me, why? Because I can't even enjoy them with my faulty Joy-Cons. Nintendo can pack all those gimmicky functions into their Joy-Cons, but when the build quality is so fragile & the price is so expensive - you start to wonder is it worth it to continue sticking with the Joy-Cons?
Even hardcore Nintendo fans also find it hard to justify the high price & the absolute crap durability of the Joy-Cons.
I know I'm fully done with the Joy-Cons for good. Maybe you should too.
Some important things you should know about this split pad, though, are that there is no rumble feature, no motion control, no IR or Amiibo sensors, and they must be connected to the Switch to work. However, I’ve been surprised how little I’ve missed these features, and the Hori split controller has a couple of nice bonus features you‘ll rarely find in other Switch controllers, namely the configurable buttons on the back, and a turbo setting, both of which have been surprisingly useful.
I recommend reading some of the longer reviews for more specific details, but I just wanted to make a quick review to give some appreciation to this fantastic controller, because it has absolutely exceeded my expectations.
The last thing I would like to mention is that these are wonderfully lightweight, and yet they also seem to be very well-made and durable, plus the thumb sticks, D-pad, and buttons all have an excellent feel to them. The thumb sticks are also taller than on the joy con, giving them a longer travel distance, which makes them much better for FPS games.
If you have large hands and/or find the regular joy con to be uncomfortable, I’d definitely give these my highest recommendation. There are a lot of other grip options that will make the Switch more comfortable, but with the Hori split pad you also get the benefit of more ergonomic, full-sized thumb sticks and buttons, and to me they are the most comfortable of all the options I’ve tried.
First, the product is well built, but is super light weight since the controllers do not have rumble motors, motion, or batteries. These controls will not work detached from the switch. Light weight does not mean poor quality though. These are well built.
Buttons: The sticks are better than the ones the original Joycons by far. They are larger and feel exactly like ps4 controller sticks. The analog sticks feel far more durable than the Joycons. All the face and programmable buttons work well and give good feedback and I also prefer them over the Joycons. The trigger buttons are okay, they are soft press and have less feedback than I prefer but it is not bad, just not as good as the joycons.
Size and fit: These are the perfect size for average adult hands. Satisfye and other cases and grips do not compare. These feel like the Pro controller in my hand. My 4 and 8 year old prefer joycon due to their hand size.
Other: These controllers do not have rumble. I would prefer HD rumble, but not many games I play make use of it. Not a big deal. When I feel I need it, I can attach Joycon. These controllers do not have battery or motion. Again, not a deal breaker since I use pro controllers and have joycon when docked.
I have a first release Switch and 2 other newer Switch consoles for my children. I have repaired drifting joy con dozens of times. I carry stock of replacement analog sticks due to the low quality of the sitcks in the Joycon. That's why having this option of better analog sticks is so compelling.
I would only change the price. Hori left out rumble, battery, motion and they did not have to fit components into a small form factor, the price should reflect that more. $35 seems like more of a fair price for this product comparing to the price of Joycon.

My only complaint would be that the pad needs a bit more grip in the area where the palms rest. When playing in a reclined position or while laying down, it can sometimes feel like the console is about to slip out of your grip onto your faces

To me, personally, these are fantastic! Incredibly comfortable and feel amazing! The back buttons are a nice addition. Buttons, sticks, triggers and bumpers are neat, the grip is fine. It is dock compatible; no need to remove these to dock the Switch!
Absolutely great for portable use, makes the Switch look wide, but you'll get used to it. Not sure about the dreaded, eventual stick drift; will update the review if I face any.
If HORI adds some missing features from the regular Joy-Cons and make wireless an option with a second generation of the Split Pad Pros, perhaps a "HORI Split Pad Pro V2", I'll gladly buy it! ( HORI, if you're reading this, please make it happen!)
I'm very satisfied with the product, Amazon's delivery & services and packaging!
Overall, an awesome product by HORI. I recommend it!
(NOTE: THE ANALOG STICKS IN MY PICTURE LOOK DIFFERENT BECAUSE I ADDED MY OWN THUMB GRIPS)
