- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2020The Asus c436 chromebook is a chromebook that has the storage, memory, and processor to do pretty much anything that you throw at it. I purchased the $999 model with 512 gb of storage and a whopping 16gb of memory with an i5 processor. The screen is probably about 280 to 290 nits...with great color saturation. I use linux, android, and web apps and they all work well. I would definitely recommend this machine over any of the others out there. The fan rarely kicks on and the machine is thin, light and does not give off very much heat. If you want a premium chromebook that will handle anything that you throw at it. Look no further.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2020I added a picture to compare it against a 13 inch MacBook air. This one is lighter and has the same foot print with a bigger screen. I actually am graduating from a 13 inch dell Chromebook, which is bigger and heavier, yet using the Asus, the keyboard and screen feels like I'm working on a larger laptop! I've been very happy using Chromebook for the ease of carrying and low maintenance. I only bought this one as I needed to pass the dell to my online student. I did my research to buy what I needed to work from home and to not worrying about buying another one in a couple of years. I'm very happy with my purchase! It's a very nice laptop.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2020I've been working from home since March (due to the COVID-19 pandemic). When I found out that I'd be working from home permanently, I purchased this Chromebook after watching YouTube reviews and reading up on this specific model. I wanted a premium Chromebook with a good amount of RAM and a good processor, and this one really delivers!
I use it everyday, and I put it through its paces. I primarily use Google Chrome, with at least 10-15 tabs open for 8 hours per day, and this Chromebook shows no signs of slowing down. Towards the end of my shift, I do notice the fans getting louder, to keep the internal parts cool.
I've only noticed two cons with this Chromebook:
1. The speakers are horrible. I didn't buy this for the audio quality, but they are bad. It says "Sound By Harman/Kardon" just below the keyboard, but that is simply marketing/branding. The audio sucks. Period. Use headphones.
2. The backlighting on the keyboard gets nice and bright, but you can see small inconsistencies. Some keys are slightly brighter than others, but it's not too big of a deal.
Overall, I love this thing. I'm working from home everyday, and this Chromebook was a wonderful investment!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021I bought this, to use on occasion. So in the last several months, I might have used it a dozen times, was great! Nice speed, great screen, brightness was adequate.
Then the weirdest thing happened. I started it up, joined a zoom meeting. Within 20 minutes, the screen froze and it stuttered audibly. I closed the lid, it kept stuttering audibly. The back was hot. I tried to do a hard shutdown, kept stuttering. I tried to do a hard shutdown for a longer time, stuttering. Finally I just kept the power button in for 2 minutes and it finally stopped. It took several hours to cool down. Later I started it up again, and it worked fine. I used it for some documents, light web viewing. Was fine for several weeks.
Today, I used it for a zoom meeting again. After the meeting was over, a notification said restart for new update. I clicked restart, screen went black. It never came back on. It is been several hours, I open the lid and it won't come on. I press the power button and it won't come on.
I'm sitting here with $1,000 dead Chromebook, only a few months old. I would never recommend this Chromebook.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2020Note I purchased this Asus Flip c436 with my own $$$... Years ago I purchased my first Chromebook, a Flip c302 when my Son started Home Schooling. I liked that machine so much that when I decided to buy a Chromebook for myself I went with a Flip c434 back in Feb 2020. I loved that machine so much that I was sad to hand it down to my Daughter when She started Home School last month. But - that gave me the perfect excuse to get myself a upgrade and I purchased the Flip c436.
After a couple weeks... I'm not exactly sorry I purchased the Flip 436, but, I am a little disappointed to be perfectly honest...
Let me get the complaints out of the way first:
1: THE Screen - is WAY-WAY-WAY Dimmer than that of the c434. It's amazing how bad this screen is in some settings. Even at 100% Brightness it is unusable in any kind of outside/brightly lit environment. I'm not talkin washing out or harder to read - I mean unusable. I have to say, having owned both... The 434 screen is actually better (by a long shot) in this department.
In real life, I used both the C434, and C436 outside under an awning sitting so the screen was not in direct sunlight. I could on the 434 adjust the brightness up to 80 or 90% and get a usable comfortable image. On the 436, even at 100% brightness the screen was nearly unusable. It is so sad that this screen does not even match that of its predecessor, and a huge disappointment.
2: The keyboard lettering: I read many negative reviews of the c434's keyboard and found in my own experience that just turning off the keyboard back light fixed pretty much any keyboard readability issues. NOT so with the 436. I don't know exactly how they have managed it, but, there are certain lighting conditions where the keys on the 436 can not be made readable. I don't know how they actually made this worse, but they have.... This is a extreme disappointment considering all the negative feedback they must have seen about the previous model.
3: The USB-A port is gone. Now I have to buy a hub or dongle. Of the three issues this is the smallest in my mind. I already needed one of these to get a working HDMI output so... Meh.
SO.
There is some good news and plenty I like:
1: The KEYS... Yes - In my humble opinion the keys (when you can read them) just feel better to my fingers. Compared to the keys on the C434 the 436 is a huge improvement in terms of tactile feel and sound. The C434 keys feel looser somehow and have an almost squeaky sound. Not so on the 436 - they feel solid and are a huge improvement over the 434, when you can see them...
2: The track pad. Compared to the c434, the track pad on the c436 is much improved. It's larger and feels better. It is a definite improvement.
3: Speed. OMG. I sprung for the 10th gen i5 with 16g and this thing flies (IMHO) compared to the c434 I gave to the Daughter. Again - improved for sure. On this subject I have to mention the heat. It seems to get warmer than the 434 does, and there is a fan... In my usage so far I notice the fan most when using Zoom, but not always even then. I call it a fair trade in return for what I perceive to be a much faster processor. Everything from cold boot to running Linux Python IDEs just feels a lot faster.
Other stuff. I read older reviews complaining of poor battery life. In my very non scientific measurements - I actually found the battery life on par or nearly so with the 434. Your mileage my vary.
To wrap up... IF the c436 had cost $50 more than the 434 I'd call it a 5 star fair trade for the improvements in speed and the track pad. As it stands - unless you absolutely "want" the 436... You should consider a different brand, or stick with the older c434. Perhaps one day they will figure it all out. If I got to start over again - I would not buy the 436 again. That makes me sad. ASUS took a real winner of a design with a few flaws, added new flaws, made it faster, too expensive, ruined the screen experience, made seeing keys harder, took a port away... In the process made it a poor choice for most users, a poor price to performance ratio for power users... All - in my humble opinion. I'll keep this one because I can work with the shortcomings, but it's honestly kind of a disappointment. This might be my last ASUS.

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful chromebook that gives you flexibility and portability
When researching chromebooks I found some reviewers picked on the screen brightness and keyboard. I have an ASUS C302 which has served me very well for the past 4 years. In spite of some of the online reviews I decided to purchase this model. I'm very satisfied with it. The screen is plenty bright enough and the keyboard is very nice to type with. I purchased an ASUS USI stylus for it and found it works very well as a drawing tablet. The fact it has 16Gb RAM means I've been able to run linux and crossover windows. This allows me to run the few specialty windows program I need to as well as some great linux applications. At work we use G-Suite and I've found using this chromebook with G-Suite provides me with the best experience because of integration. I connect it to a USB docking station with 2 monitors and a wireless keyboard which also works flawlessly. It's fast, flexible, quiet and has great battery life. It's also very light so I can take it anywhere with me. I pair it with my android phone with an unlimited data plan so I can connect online from anywhere. It is a bit pricey for a chromebook but if you need USI stylus support, the ability to run android, windows, and linux applications and a device which is light and portable I highly recommend this chromebook. It's solidly built and will provide many years of service.
