Sleek and capable streaming device. VERY FAST!
    4 out of 5 stars
Sleek and capable streaming device. VERY FAST!
I Just received my Nvidia shield in the mail, the SHIELD TV not the PRO.Whats' in the box?NVIDIA SHIELD TVRemoteControllerPower AdapterCharging Cable (for controller)What's not in the box?HDMI cable - This is rather annoying, but most people will have another one laying around somewhere.Initial build quality impressions: 4/5Unit does not have a very substantial feeling to it, feels rather lightweight and a little flimsy. Both the remote and gamepad have a good feel in my hands and I enjoy holding them. For what it is the build quality is adequate though, just don’t drop it.Getting started: 4.5/5Upon starting the unit you will need to setup the unit with your Google account. This can be either done using the controller or using your android smartphone / tablet. The latter, did not work for me. I received an error that something went wrong and the setup aborted on my phone. No big deal, the on screen setup is rather painless. After the setup the device will download a rather large (1.07GB) software package and then ask to restart. Upon restart the SHIELD will take you to it's main app screen.Interface: 5/5The main interface is very clean and very fast. Apps are laid out in the traditional tile orientation with menus being very easy to navigate.HDR Test: 4/5One of the major reasons I purchased this is the HDR support that it offers over other boxes. So, first thing I did was sign into my Amazon Prime Instant Video account and fire up an episode of "Mozart in the Jungle". As soon as the video launched the TV switched over to HDR settings and I was good to go.Amazon: HDR is working.Youtube: HDR NOT working: Attempted to play "The World in HDR" TV is not switching to HDR settingsNetflix: Update 1/16/2016: HDR is now working. You need to update the Netflix app via the "Google Play Store" on the main dashboard in order to have HDR work.Internal Storage: 3.5/5The base version has 16GB of internal storage, which is realistically 11GB after allocation. Time will tell if this will suffice for my needs. It should be noted that a MICRO SD CAN NOT be used with the base version, that slot is only on the pro version. It did allow me to connect a 128GB USB flash drive to be used as additional internal storage.Gaming: 4.5/5I tested a few Android games that I bought previously from the Google Play Store. I played Final Fantasy and Goat Simulator. Both games mapped controls as if you were playing on a console and it translates well to the SHIELD. I did not try any kind of game streaming yet as I don't have access to any content at this time.Game Emulation:5/5 I've gotten a few questions on emulation and gamepad input lag so I did some testing on a few different emulators. So far I've tested MUPEN64, Snes9x+, ePSXe, MD.Emu and NES.Emu. In all instances the software automatically mapped the NVIDIA Gamepad to appropriate buttons. All of the games I tested ran very smoothly, with a little bit of situational lag on the N64 Emu, but this was with settings maxed. I noticed absolutely no input lag from the gamepad and everything felt very responsive. It's possible people who are very sensitive to input lag may feel differently, YMMV.Gamepad: 4.5/5The game pad is almost the exact same size as my XBOX ONE S controller with a button layout a little closer to a Sony DUALSHOCK controller, with the D-Pad being above the left stick. The game pad battery does not come fully charged so I suggest plugging it in and charging it after unboxing if you want to use it.Remote 4/5The remote is not chargeable and does not use a traditional AA/AAA battery. It instead uses 2 "CR 2032" flat cell batteries that are claimed to last about a year. To change the batteries you need to use a fine point (pen etc.) to press in the small button on the bottom of the remote, the battery tray should then eject.UPDATE 1/21/2017: Like many of the other reviewers my remote is completely worthless now. Initially I did not notice any issues with it, but lately it is either lagging severely or not responding at all. Hopefully this can be resolved with software updates, if not NVIDIA is going to need to replace all of the remotes. My current remote version is 1.03.UPDATE 2/19/2017: Android TV 5.1 and remote firmware v1.05 both had a rollout on my device on 2/18/2017. The combination of these updates seems to have greatly improved the functionality of the remote. Aside from the initial lag when you "wake" the remote, it seems to be completely lag free now. Thank you NVIDIA for resolving this issue that has plagued so many of us.Voice Search: 3.5/5Voice search so far seems very nice, but as far as I can tell it doesn't find programs on Prime Video from the home screen. If I say "The Man in High Castle" it will pull up a review and a cast list, but no option to watch on Amazon. But if I search "X-Files" It will show up as available to watch on "Netflix" and I can watch it. The voice search is supposed to get more support at a later date with the addition of Google Home features.Network: 4/5In order for the SHIELD to appear on your network, you need to update the PLEX server first and enable the device in the "Storage and Reset" menu. For some reason I was unable to update PLEX server in the "Google Play" app on the device and I had to manually push it from the google play store on my PC.UPDATE 1/17/17: I've recently been having issues with the other PCs in my house not being able to see the shield on the network. This is making it so I can't drop files directly on the shield. This initially worked when I got it set up, but is no longer. What I've been doing as a workaround is putting files into a shared folder I named "SHIELD TRANSFER" and pulling the files over using the free app "ES FILE EXPLORER". It's inconvenient, but it works. This will become more of an issue if I decide to host media on the shield and attempt to watch it on other devices. This issue may be isolated to my network.UPDATE 1/18.17: I did some digging and got the drive to finally show on the network (hopefully for good). This is from Nvidia’s site, I suggest you give it a try if you’re having issues like I was:“To immediately connect to your SHIELD, type “\\SHIELD” into the Windows Explorer address bar. If you changed your device name (found in Settings > About on your SHIELD), replace “SHIELD” with your device name (without any spaces). Alternatively, you can type your SHIELD’s IP address into the Windows Explorer address bar: \\192.168.1.X (find your IP address on the “Access SHIELD folders on PC” page). You can also permanently map your SHIELD as a network drive by right-clicking on “Network” in File Explorer and selecting “Map Network Drive”. Select an unused Drive letter. In the Folder field, type your IP address and the folder path to map. Example: “\\192.168.1.5\internal”. Select “Reconnect at logon” and then Click “Finish”.”Complaints: I feel that the omission of an IR sensor and MICRO SD slot on the base version of the SHIELD to be a poor decision. Most people are not comfortable spending an extra $100 for features that were standard in the previous version of this device. I'm also annoyed to a lesser extent by the lack of an HDMI cable. The remote in it's current state is worthless and needs to be resolved either by replacement or a patch.Overall Rating: 4.25/5After having a few days getting the device mostly set up for my use, I must say I’ve very pleased with the unit overall. It’s hands down the fastest streaming device I’ve ever used, much faster than my XBOX ONE S and ROKU 3. The ability to use the device as network storage makes transferring files and media between PC and SHIELD very easy. Although the SHIELD TV unit itself and the controller function very well, the remote is completely worthless. The device is almost perfect if they can get the remote issues resolved.UPDATE 2/19/2017: Recent firmware updates with Android TV 5.1 and remote firmware 1.05 have resolved the previous issues with the remote. The only nagging issue I am having is the shield network storage "unmounting" itself whenever the device restarts, which makes it a hassle to transfer content on the fly without having to first re-mount the device. If there is a fix for this I would love to know..

Ok so this review should help a lot of people that's on the fence or that's planning to buy a higher end box first off let me say that I am very into technology have built computers done programming etc and I have also owned probably around 10 (most likely more) streaming products

First I want to say this was bought with my own money I'm not being paid by anyone this is a true review. So recently I have purchased the t95z octacore android box 3/32gb model also just purchased the H96 max android box which is one of the top of the line products with the hexacore processor from rockchip 4/32gb model I'll start with t95z all I can say is don't bother I won't say no more since they gave me a full refund onto the H96 max now keep in mind both of these boxes have more memory H96 max has more RAM again with the H96 max don't bother so this goes from around $100 for t95z to $150 for H96 max both have bigger processor at least more cores.
Now I have just bought the nvidia sheild tv (base model) not pro so 16gb version going from the H96 max to this would be like going from dial up to high speed internet thru Ethernet ya 16gb is a little low for memory but that's an easy fix with a $20 3.0 USB flash drive (64gb) or as big as you want the nvidia shield is by far the best media box on the market it's at least 10x faster than ANY android box I have used (10+) plays 4k movies brilliantly I put large heavy kodi builds on my streaming boxes when I've tried with others it bogs them down horribly at the end on most boxes I just switched to lighter (firestick) builds not to slow it down. When I received my nvidia shield I started with set-up which was a breeze updated everything and made a few personal tweaks under devolver menu which if you don't know what your doing I don't recommend or go one YouTube I have a video on there of a walkthru how to beat setup the box and so does others I also downloaded all my apps along with my own custom build which is well over 1gb which is a very large build I had high expectations since I own lots of nvidia products and also had just bought a gaming/editing laptop with nvidia GeForce 1080 gpu 8gb the speed ease of use setup configuration and everything about the shield has completely blew me away it's way faster even with the high expectations I had.
The boxes I have used in the past was all top end boxes and most had more RAM and more memory the shield leaves them in the dust I hadn't bought one cause I figured I didn't need it I mostly just stream on it and have so many other devices for gaming but that was a huge mistake that kept me from buying this and was stupid I was of course expecting this to be much better for gaming than the android boxes I had used but I wasn't concerned about gaming so I figured the H96 max with more Ram hexacore processor and 32gb of memory would suit me better and it had rave reviews about fluidity and speed from friends in the tech world when I tested it I hated it honestly I thought it was sluggish slow and wasn't quite polished enough maybe after a year or two and a better firmware update but even with that it could never stand toe to toe with the shield. Now as far as gaming if your buying the shield for gaming first streaming second great I have played games streaming from my computer and it works wonderfully fast responsive and the games you can download onto the system work flawless and play perfect I have never had one bit of lag zero loading time and great gpu performance which is expected coming from the gpu king the GeForce now gaming platform is amazing and I highly recommend shelling out the $7.00-$8.00 a month for it great value with all the free games you get not only games that would cost $60+ for a console but they have games specifically made for this system only the shield is perfect they have no need to improve nothing imo ya it sucks that they took out the micro sd on base model and no IR now but those are both easy fixes and for the money $199.99 it's an amazing value the new control is amazing feels great in your hand and works perfectly the media controller is so so but hey it's free used to be a $50-60 upgrade in short if you don't play games and want by far the best streaming media player on the market buy this.
If you do play games want awesome content and want to stream your pc onto big screen AND have a great streaming engine BUY THIS!!!!!

I have never tested a machine that I have liked BETTER than this or that does the job it's made for so well DO NOT EVEN BOTHER WITH ANDROID BOXES give the extra money get yourself a shield then once you do you can thank me for saving you a lot of frustrating loading freezing and you'll get a great gaming machine as well imo this box is better than PS4 Xbox1 etc and better than any kodi box you could buy so as far as value goes this is amazing

I truly do not know how anyone on here has not given this machine 5* for $199.99 what more could they expect

LOVE LOVE LOVE my shield and could never go back to another box

Lives up to its stellar reputation. Over the years I've purchased more than a dozen set-top boxes. Without a doubt, the Shield is in a class of its own. The performance is unmatched. If you are shopping for a box in early 2018, look no further. This is your best value.
Maybe later in the year somebody might come up with a comparable product; but right now the NVIDIA SHIELD is what you need to buy.
The remote control is smooth, lightweight, and simple. Even has a voice function. That said, I wish the remote had an audio port and air mouse option. You will need some sort of mouse to navigate Google Playstore and other sources during the initial set up. However, for daily operation the remote works fine.
This model has only 16Gb of internal memory. The Pro version has lots more internal storage; but I'm not convinced it's worth the extra cost. I purchased a 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive from Amazon and programmed that to serve as additional internal storage. If you are a Gamer, you might want to consider adding a larger external storage device. The only "problem" occurs if you unplug the Shield from power. On the next boot-up, it might take a couple of minutes for the external apps to get reloaded. However, 16 GB is probably sufficient for most users who simply want a device to stream movies, tv shows, and live broadcasts. YouTube can show you how to set up your Shield with more options than you will ever use.
There are only TWO usb ports on the shield. So far, that has not been an issue for me. I use one port for the flash drive; and the other for the dongle to operate a wireless keyboard/mouse. Still, I bet somebody out there will wish there was one more hole.
Listen, this thing is lightning fast. Watch 4K movies with zero buffering. Change screens in the blink of an eye. And if you still aren't happy, there are settings that that make it even faster.
Speaking of settings, it might take some patience to get accustomed to the layout if you have been weaned on Android 6. And, the Google Playstore experience leaves something to be desired. You can still get your basics (Kodi, IP Vanish, etc) from the Google Store; but most of your APKs will come from sources via Aptoide. Before setting up your device, please watch YouTube. Then, watch YouTube and make written notes. Not trying to scare you; it's really simple if you follow the instructions. (No instructions come with the Shield.)
Have you been carping about slow speeds when you activate your VPN? Well buy an NVidia Shield. It really makes a difference if your internet service is in that 100Mbs - 200 Mbs range.
After all the hype, you expect the Shield to be some HUGE device that clutters up your entertainment center. Not so. It is surprisingly small for such a powerful unit. Actually looks more petite than several of my boxes that have less than half the performance.
The NVidia Shield is not the perfect box. But, in my opinion, it is the best available at this time. Pricey? Perhaps. How many mid-range boxes are you willing to buy before you realize this is the one you should have bought in the first place? Go for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars For streaming locally and online, this is the king of streamers
Reviewed in Canada on February 22, 2017

This is by far the best Android TV on the market. I'll focus entirely on functionality as you can check out unboxing, hardware specs etc. online. Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Video etc. all come pre-loaded. Most importantly, you can load Network-Attached Storage (NAS) devices. Since all my content is stored on a NAS, this was important to me. Second, it can load Kodi. You can install additional plugins (like Exodus) on Kodi as well.

The device is adequately powered for apps like Netflix as well as Kodi. It is responsive and not sluggish, unlike a lot of other cheap Android boxes I've tried in the past. I don't have an Android phone but I assume if you have one, you can use it to extend the keyboard on the screen. The on-screen keyboard is decent though. The biggest plus is that it supports 4K streaming (Netflix - assuming you have the right plan, YouTube etc.)

Chromecast is built in so you can cast from YouTube, Twitch, Spotify etc. People have complained about Amazon video not showing up. For some reason, Nvidia doesn't recognize that Amazon video is now available in Canada. As a result, if you select your location, the Amazon video disappears. You can always disable the location and the app will show up again. I tried this and it works. However, two points: first, Amazon video's selection in Canada is terrible for now. Once it improves, you might actually use it more. Second, Nvidia will eventually fix the availability via a future update so this is not a permanent problem (especially since there is a workaround, as mentioned above).

This device also supports HDMI-CEC. With my Samsung TV, this means that I can press a button on the remote and the device will come on and switch on my TV automatically. Similarly, when it goes to sleep, the TV will also turn off automatically. This makes it quite convenient. Note however, that different brands of TVs (and even different models) have a different implementation of HDMI-CEC so your usage may vary. On a side note, the remote is also compatible with the Sonos playbar (since the remote has a built-in IR blaster).

You can download games from the Android (Google) play store. Not all games are supported but the Play store will tell you which apps/games are compatible before you purchase/download. I bought Leo's Fortune to test out the controller and it works beautifully. The controller is surprisingly comfortable, even thought the angular shape is an acquired taste.

My only drawback with this device is game stream [SEE UPDATE BELOW]. I would have loved to stream my PC games to this device but I am not able to. It gives me a message about high packet loss, which makes the games unplayable. I think this might have to do with my graphics card (since my home is wired for ethernet). My PC is ultra-wide (3440x1440) but my TV is 4K (3840x2160). As a result, my graphics card has to upscale the game and send it across the network. Nvidia suggests a GTX1080 for 4K streaming but my 980TI is relatively new and I don't want to give it up just yet. Besides, I get full resolution and glorious high-resolution (Ultra settings on Witcher 3!) on my PC so it's not a deal breaker to not be able to play games from my PC to my TV. I didn't try Nvidia's GeForce NOW service (which streams games over the internet). I would much rather prefer to play games locally where I can get max resolution and max FPS. Android games run buttery-smooth though so it's not a complete loss.

Summary: if your primary focus is streaming, then this device is your dream come true. This is a gorgeous device, very responsive, supports plenty of apps and games from the Play store and is regularly updated. If you can afford the premium price, you won't be disappointed.

[UPDATE: After some digging around, I found out that streaming problems can be fixed by changing the Speed and Duplex settings on your PC's NIC. I had mine set to 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex. Once I changed it to 100Mbps Full Duplex, Gamestream (incl. Steam Big Picture) worked smoothly. I was able to stream games from my PC to the Shield device flawlessly (including running Witcher 3 in Ultra settings without any dropped packets). Incidentally, this fix will also often fix problems with the Steam Link.

To change your duplex and speed in Win 10, open up Device Manager > Network Adapters > select your NIC (usually says Ethernet in the title), right click and select Properties > Advanced tab > Speed and Duplex > 100 Mbps Full Duplex
