Watching YouTube videos provided no noticeable latency issues. Same with Netflix and Amazon. Great earbuds to watch movies with. There were times when I noticed a very small delay/latency, but it corrected itself right away. I don't think that has to do with the Liberty 2 Pros, as much as the general stream overall. So, for entertainment, watching videos etc., I'll give them an 8 out of 10. The Soundcore app does what it’s supposed to do, and the fact that there is a dedicated app to fine tune the buds is a bonus. I only wish Anker would provide a graphic equalizer option to truly customize the sound. Maybe in a future software update? Anker, are you listening? The charging case is either a love it or like it thing. I love it. The way the top slides open is classy. It's cool. And it’s different than flipping a top like on other cases. The case has a smooth feel to it and fits comfortably in a pocket. The battery life is simply outstanding, and probably the best out there right now. USB-C is a great choice for fast wired charging, but the fact that they support wireless charging was the icing on the cake. One of my favorite non-listening aspects of the Liberty 2 Pros.
Now, for where I feel the Liberty 2 Pros could improve... call quality. Even with the 4 microphones, callers I asked would say there was a difference in speaking through the buds and using the actual phone. The buds made the calls "distant" sounding. I heard it for myself. It's by no means a deal-breaker, but something that could be improved upon. Ambient noise cancelling was pretty good, as callers didn't notice excessive bleed-through of other voices or street noise. Overall, I would give them a 5 out of 10 for call quality, and a 6/10 for noise rejection.
Overall recommendations: I would certainty stack the Anker Liberty 2 Pros against other mid-premium earbuds in the $150-$200 price bracket. I paid $117 (with tax), and for that price, they simply cannot be beat. Period. Since the price has dropped over the past couple of months, I might guess that Anker is planning an updated offering in the $150-$200 range. If that were to happen, I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade, if they really were able to improve on these already outstanding earbuds. If sound quality is important to you, as it is to me, these are a fantastic bargain for under $200. If call quality is most important to you, then you may want to look elsewhere. Again, not a deal breaker for me, but it could be for you. I would buy these again, in a second. I really like the Liberty 2 Pros by Anker. They do what they are designed to do very well, and that's what matters.
Objectively, these earbuds are fantastic. I’ve used them daily for about 6 months, from my desk to the gym to the woodshop. I’ve listened to hundreds of hours of music and audiobooks. There is absolutely zero distortion, ever. They are loud enough to make me (a drummer and 20-year AV pro) happy well below max volume. Bass is tight, clean and loud. Not overly augmented with factory EQ, which some manufacturers use to impress you in the first 10 seconds, but later you realize it’s just a muddy mess below 200Hz. Not here. You’ll be happy even hours later.
Other observations…
Sound Isolation: These do not have active noise cancellation, and that was initially a concern for me as I intended to use them in a woodshop with lots of droning noise...fans, vacuums, motors, saw blades, etc. I wanted to reduce my end-of-day ear fatigue by reducing the noise level of the shop while also listening to music and books. After using these for 6 months, I no longer want active noise cancellation. I prefer these. They fit tight and do an excellent job of knocking ambient noise down by maybe 20dB or so. Enough to make it easy to hear my audio, but I can still hear the tools as well. Just...not so loud. It’s perfect for me. Likewise, when out for a run, the outside world is quieted, but not muted. I know when a car is coming up behind me, but it’s not distracting.
Fit and Comfort: Anker includes a variety of covers to help make these buds fit snugly. On days when I’ve spent 12+ hours on the woodshop, I have no pain whatsoever from wearing them. It’s easy to forget they’re even there. I do strongly recommend taking the time to try different covers and retainers. The combo I ended up with is different from what I initially thought would work, and I’m glad I took the time to play around with the fit. It went from great to perfect.
Controls: This is another area where Anker went the extra mile. Through the app I was able to set up single, double and long-press for the functions that made sense to me. Very easy, very awesome. The button...thank you Anker for locating the button on the TOP and not the side of the earbuds. It’s an easy button to find and hit, and unlike side-facing buttons, you don’t end up shoving the bud into your ear canal trying to just press the dang button. Thank you thank you thank you for that.
Wireless Performance: Connection is easy (at least on Android...not sure about iPhone). After the initial pairing, the buds try to start connecting as soon as you pop the case open, so by the time they're in your ears you’re ready to go. If I walk too far from my phone (and it has to be pretty far...the range on these is really good), they reconnect very fast as soon as I’m back in range, with a pleasant little da-ding sound to let you know you’re back online. You can also use either left or right bud solo. I don’t think there’s anything left to improve in this area. It just works.
Charging and Storage: Remember when The Matrix came out, and everyone was dying to get one of those Nokia phones with the slip cover thing? That’s what the storage case reminds me of. They could have hinged the case. But no, it slides. It’s just cool. Unnecessary, but cool. The case is very solidly built and feels premium to the touch. And since Anker is also known for their charging and battery products, I guess it’s no surprise that the case will charge the heck out of your buds without being plugged in for...I dunno, a long time. They certainly didn’t skimp on the case battery. When the case does need charging, you have that beautiful USB-C jack, OR Qi wireless charging. I usually just toss it on the wireless charger a few times a week whether it's needed or not. In any event, this works out really well for long-distance travel. I recently drove a U-Haul 2500 miles over 4 days, and although I didn’t use the earbuds the whole time, I did use them a lot and never had to plug the case in. Niiiiice.
Credit where credit is due, and Anker is a special company. They are highly attentive and their customer service is outstanding. When I first received my Liberty 2 Pros, I noticed that the right earbud didn’t always take a full charge. A quick message to Anker, and they jumped on it immediately and sent me a whole new pair, with their apologies. Not sure what caused the issue...probably a bum battery cell. This happens to everyone from time to time and is unavoidable with small electronics. I’ve installed $70k digital audio consoles with minor issues like that. The difference is how the manufacturer deals with these rare speed bumps. I will continue to buy Anker because I know that even if there is a rare issue like that, they will make it right so fast your head will spin. Today, my family of 6 has a total of 8 different Anker wireless audio products. We all love them and use them constantly. We no longer buy any other brand of charging products either. These guys are killing it.
Top reviews from other countries
My test bed is my iPhone 14 Plus, since that's what I use these on every day. However, I'm not using the built-in music app. I prefer to use JetAudio for its plugins (in-app purchase required) and 20-band EQ (10 if you don't pay for the extra), as it really lets me customize the sound to my liking with extreme granularity.
Build quality:
These are built pretty well. Mostly plastic bodies, including the charge case, but they feel good and solid. The sliding lid of the charge case is nice and smooth but a bit thin, so that might be a point of failure at some juncture. The buds themselves though are solid, the buttons have a nice tactile yet mostly silent click that doesn't take a lot of force to depress, which is very nice.
Fit:
These come with 5 sizes of silicone ear tips for a wide range of ear shapes and sizes, which is a good assortment -- generally 2 more pairs than most buds give you. They work as well as any silicone tips do, if you like that sort of thing. Unfortunately, I absolutely hate silicone tips, but I bought these because one of the images in the listing showed the bare post without a tip attached, and it looked like it could be a 4mm post diameter -- and the good news is, it is, which means my favourite Comply TSX-400 memory foam tips work on them. (The RHAs also had a 4mm post, which is what I used them on, so it's really nice to know the same tips work on these). Memory foam tips like Comply, while not cheap, are far more comfortable, create a much better seal than silicone, which makes for better bass response and better noise isolation overall, and also stay in your ears infinitely better than silicone, even if you sweat. If you buy these TWS IEMs, and you can swing the extra cost, do yourself a favour and get the memory foam tips. You'll really be glad you did. Just remember to clean them with a soft cloth or paper towel frequently. Also, yes, these will fit back in the charging case with the foam tips on, but only if you're using the Comply 400 Comfort tips (the rounded ball-shaped ones). I use Medium size, and it's a *slight* squeeze in that the tips butt up against each other, but it fits just fine without any difficulty. Large may be a bit tighter but will probably still work. The longer tips though may give you difficulty.
Now, these are chonky, there's no doubt. They stick out a fair bit from the ears, but I can still wear a hat in the winter and they're fine. They aren't heavy, so they don't bounce around or threaten to drop out, even with the silicone tips, but they'll fill your earholes but good.
Pairing:
Couldn't be easier. Once I paired with my iPhone for the first time, they activate and are connected before I've even got them nestled in my ears. When I'm done I just put them back in the case and they disconnect and go about their day charging. Bear in mind that there's no way to turn these off _without_ putting them in their case, so this may be a bit of an issue for some.
Sound:
And here we come to the real meat of the review: How do they sound? In a word, excellent. In two, f****** excellent. This "Astria" thing they talk about which is able to keep frequencies separate for clear bass without compromising mids or treble may sound like hype, but I'll be damned if it doesn't do exactly what it says on the tin. I listened to a variety of music, from Pink Floyd to Yello, Art of Noise to Stoneface and Terminal, Shakta, Def Leppard, Haywire, Howard Jones, and all sorts of others; from otherwise muddy mixes to pieces that really need balance to be truly appreciated, these made everything sound fantastic. Saga's "Wind him Up", which really isn't mixed well, suddenly sounded brighter than it ever had, with sibilants coming through in ways I simply hadn't heard before. A remix of Yello's "Vicious Games" that features bits where a jazzy muted trumpet comes into play sounded fantastic; you could really hear that brass ringing with each note. Something with thumping kicks or soul-shaking bass drones came through loud and clear and yet the highs weren't even bothered, they just slipped in over top, clear as day, like it was no big thing. In short, these perform more like dual driver buds -- hell, even on par at least with the Triple.Fis. Deep bass, clear mids, and crisp highs that don't get spitty. I really couldn't ask for more in a pair of true wireless IEMs. You aren't going to get that wide soundstage open-back cans give you, but that's expected for IEMs. But you can always use something like JetAudio with a plugin or two to simulate a wider soundstage.
The App:
Although you don't _need_ to use it, you can download the Anker Soundcore app to connect to these, and that will give you some extra features, including, most importantly, EQ settings. It does come with a bunch of presets tuned by award winning artists, but if you prefer to tune things yourself, it also has a customizable 8-band graphic equalizer that tunes from 100Hz to 12.8KHz (one presumes the 100Hz band also gives a bell-curve bump to lower frequencies too), and you can save your own EQ presets for different applications. Not sure what to set your EQ to and the other presets don't quite do it for what you're listening to? There's a "HearID" feature that will step you through a series of frequencies to determine how your specific ears hear things, and create an EQ preset based on its findings. It's a nice touch, because everyone hears things a little differently, and this lets you easily have your hand held while it creates an EQ profile tailored for your specific ears. I don't use any of this as I use the JetAudio EQ and a 3D Audio plugin for enhanced soundstage, but for those stuck with Apple's crappy presets (seriously Apple, it's been two decades, give us a proper EQ already, your presets are trash!), this is an absolute godsend. This is why I liked the Roam Ropes when I had them, they had a similar app (now long gone making the buds useless), though only 3-band, but it was way better than the presets. My RHAs have no app, which is what prompted be to get JetAudio.
The app also lets you define what the button on each of the earpieces does beyond the single-press play/pause. You can define what it does with a double-click, and what it does for a 1-second long press -- and for those that complained that these have no volume control, this is where you can set the buttons to perform that function.
Charging:
Easy-peasy. The buds charge in their case, and the case charges with a standard USB-C connector, which is protected by a captured rubber insert you can pull out and rotate out of the way for easy access. Charge times are perfectly reasonable, and there's a 3-LED charge level indicator on the front of the case you can check with a press of the flush button on the rear. The case also tells you when the buds are properly seated and charging when you close the lid, flashing the left and right LEDs a couple of times to let you know both the left and right buds are charging. If only one flashes, or neither flash, it means they're not seated properly. The buds need to be seated on their side, the left on the left side and the right on the right, obviously, with the tips pointing toward the center at the bottom. (If the charging contacts don't immediately tell you which side is down, the buds are clearly marked L and R as well.) The charging case _is_ a bit chonky on its own, but not obtrusively so; it's oval, like a smooth pebble, and has a light rubberized finish, so it slips into a pocket pretty easily.
Battery life:
No complaints here. I have a hellishly long daily bus commute (3 hours one way, 3-4 back) and, using them both ways every day, I can get a good four days out of them before they need to be charged.
Latency:
For music and videos, latency is a non-issue. Music responds instantly, and videos are perfectly synced to the audio. No problems there. Apps, though? Games? These can be weirdly hit or miss. Playing, say, GTA III or May Payne, no problem, which is good because the timing of audio cues in these games is important. What The Golf? or Castle Crumble, though, for example, have a weird audio lag of about a quarter second, and I have no idea why. I assume it's the audio API they use when developing the games, but it's an odd problem and a bit disconcerting. Fortunately this isn't my primary use case, but it's worth mentioning just the same.
Overall:
I'm extremely happy with these. They handily beat both of my last wireless buds, and seriously challenge some of the best wired buds I've ever owned, even the multi-driver ones, which is astonishing in its own right for single-driver buds. Soundstage is great for IEMs, frequency response is wide and crystal clear at all frequencies, bass is ear-rattling (if you've set the EQ for it), highs are crisp without spitting, mids are clean and clear, and all of my music just sounded better, especially tunes that weren't necessarily mixed well to begin with. I had no issues with desyncing, pairing, or connecting so far. Granted, I've only been using them about a week, so we'll see how these fare with long-term use, but for now, I have to give these two enthusiastic thumbs up. Anker did a phenomenal job with these, and they're well worth the spend.
I'm not an "audiophile" who obsesses about speaker cables and 20k tube amps, but I do think music should be heard as the artists who made it intended. (Like, if I get in a rental car the first thing I do is flatten the EQ, someone inevitably has boosted the bass and treble.) I get joy out of hearing the subtleties, small dynamic changes, quiet cymbal shimmer, breaths of a singer, even the background shuffling in a chamber concert or speaker hum from an old recording. I know a pair of headphones or speakers are good when I hear some aspect of the music I never heard before. But more than anything I need neutral, unbiased sound.
I'm aware that bluetooth ear buds have inherent limitations, but even factoring that in, I've been horribly dissapointed by every bluetooth earbud I've tried -- including the Sennheiser CX400BT that I had high hopes for but thoroughly sucked (muddy, unbalanced, terrible dynamics) and my son's Galaxy Pro (typical consumer sound, not terrible just not for actual music) -- I found these and the best thing I can say about these is: "holy s*(&, they don't suck!"
Note that bass is heavy, boosted and boomy out of the box -- I guess that's what many folks are looking for -- but that's easily fixed in EQ. I recommend a reverse v, dropping the lows a lot and the high treble just a bit, or find one of the presets that work well for you. The app tools are pretty good for this. Even so they aren't as crips as I'd like, but with a single driver and at this price I don't know how they'd do much better.
_non sound quality things_
• My wife asked me if I can connect two devices at same time, and how the mike quality is and my answer was "I could care less", so again you can see where my priorities are, look at other reviews if you care about that stuff. :)
• They fit extremely well, lot's of options both for wings and ear canal -- these are the first ear buds that don't fall out of my ear.
• Given above the sound isolation is really good -- they don't completely block noise like my old Schure and Etymoic IEMs (which of course sound waayy better than these, but given these are bluetooth I recognize the tradeoffs and am ok with them) -- but way better than others I've tried.
• Love, love love that they use actualy physical buttons!! With the others I was always inadvertently triggerring Siri or some other thing that I didn't want to happen every time I adjusted them or scratched my ear.
• The app works well. The custom sound tuning thing is sort of a gimmick, just a hearing test that sets EQ, but whatever, I think it will be useful for people who have subtle hearing loss.
• Packaging was really nice to the extent I'd say it was overdone -- magnetic clasps on the box etc... I feel like this is wasteful from an eco perspective since most people will just toss the box.
• The charger is really nice, I esp. liked the damped lid.
Overall Anker put a lot of thought into these ear buds, if your priorities are similar to mine, I think you'll like them too! Everyone has different tastes but if you're going for accuracy and enjoyment from reproduction these are the best of reasonably priced bluetooth solutions. Hope this helped you decide. :D
Gut gemacht Soundcore.
The real solution would be for soundcore to put a higher capacity battery in the right bud.
I bought these after returning a pair from a different manufacturer that sounded great but had many quality control issues. They say every cloud has a silver lining, well this is it for me.
Firstly I noted some reviewers said they heard a background hiss. As soon as I connected to the app it asked me to do a firmware update which took 5 minutes. I then found a quiet room an did the ear tests. I have not heard any background hiss on any music except for old recordings which has background hiss whatever headphones I play it through.
Sound quality is excellent, close to my Grado over ear headphones. The sound stage is wide and on my test recordings I found it easy to identify separate instruments. Not flat, probably slightly bass weighted. However the app allows fine tuning in the equalizer.
Fit in my ears was straight forward, I am using the supplied tips and wings and haven't had to change either. It is important to insert them then twist them down so the wings hold them in place as shown in the instructions.
Battery life seems very good. Nearly 5 hours so far of continuous playback. Build quality is also good, they feel like premium buds.
