Size: I think the first thing I noticed is how much bigger they are than the wired wireless buds they were replacing. But once they're in and on the ear, the size isn't noticeable. I love the ear hooks for while I'm running, they feel super stable.
Sound/Connection: I was skeptical about the sound of these earbuds as they don't have the aptX Bluetooth codec that gives better sound. Thankfully the 3 built-in equalizer settings sound great. Well, the JLab default Signature sound EQ works the best for me. I have to say the instructions made it sound like the initial pairing would be difficult, but it was no different from pairing any other Bluetooth device. Then, every subsequent time you use them they automatically pair with your phone and each other without any issues. The buds stay connected to themselves with no problem and stay connected to the phone with no problems. This is an update over the previous pair I'm using that would occasionally lose connection. A feature that I kind of overlooked when checking these out, the Be Aware Audio, has turned out to be really useful on runs where I'm sharing the road with cars or bikers. So that's a plus. And finally, phone calls sound great and I apparently sound fine to others when on a call. This definitely beats the pair I'm replacing as no one could really hear me since the mic was positioned behind my ear.
Accessories: The charging case that comes with it is great. I don't worry about battery life at all between the 6 hours on the buds and the 32 hours in the case. The lights work well to let you know if the buds are charging or if the case needs to be charged. The integrated cable is nice, but kind of awkward when using a different cable to charge since I don't have the case that close to an outlet. The fact I can also use the battery in the case to charge another device is a nice added bonus. My one gripe about these earbuds is that of all the ear tips included, none of them really worked for me. To be fair I've had this problem with ANY earbud I've used, so I'm not really holding this against JLab, but it was disappointing to spend $149 and still have to spend another $10 on ear tips. My issue is I never felt like any of the ear tips really fit well enough to make me feel that the buds were in my ear securely and comfortably. The foam ones included were closest, but they only supply medium-sized ones, and I think I needed larger. I ended up getting a set that are larger in diameter and longer to get in deeper.
Controls: This is probably my biggest issue with these buds. There's a bunch of tapping and holding to get used to. Double tap the left to play/pause music, single taps on either side to raise or lower volume, triple tap either side to engage Be Aware Mode, long taps to skip forward or backward, and double tap the right bud to engage Google Assistant/Siri. I am still trying to figure out at just what speed to tap as I often end up pausing music when I mean to get into Be Aware mode. Initially, I was going to ding JLab for this, but looking around this seems to be a common problem with any truly wireless earbuds. The basic commands get quickly memorized though, so I would say it's not that big of a deal.
In the end, I've been enjoying these earbuds a lot in all my outdoor activities and have been very happy with the results so far, and if you're looking for stable, exercise resistant earbuds, these are for you.
My main complaint is the "be aware" feature is horrible and is not useable. Maybe I have a defective set, but when enabled this feature amplifies every noise without any sort of filter. This means that in the slightest breeze you're just hearing the wind noise over the mic. It seems like this could be addressed with some firmware update as this should be basic filtering...but you won't be able to use this feature if you want to enjoy your music.
Subtracting 1 star for the charging case. It's thick and heavy - only pocketable really if you wear big pants or a vest/jacket or carry a purse - nobody would put it in their pockets at a nightclub. I would've been thrilled with half the weight & battery capacity, and 1/2-3/4 the case volume.
The "Be Aware" external audio pass-through doesn't seem to make much difference, but does pick up wind noise. Seems a gimmick, but I probably haven't tested it well yet (I haven't tried it while talking to someone, like a cafe barista).
Strongly recommended if you want reliable, long-lived, great-sounding true wireless!
It took a bit to get used to learning the commands on the touch controls (volume, changing songs), but after using them enough I caught on fairly quick. I loved the fit particularly, they were very secure through all my long runs and have been the only earbud that I found a good fit with, which is what initially attracted me in the first place. That ear hook really holds them in place.
When I saw the launch of their new earbud, the Epic Air Elite, I was curious what had been upgraded from the pair I already owned. After reading on their site that they would automatically turn on and pair to each other out of the case, I knew I had to get the upgraded version. I am SO happy with the easy setup and connection of these and that they still kept the same great fit or the ear hook.
Not only did they keep the features I loved (the fit, impressive battery life, excellent sound quality, and price) they added a few more things to make it worth buying. Besides the easy setup, the earbuds now have the ability to change the sound if you’d like more bass or a more even tone, which is pretty cool. As a runner, I really like the ability to turn their “Be Aware Audio” on or off, which allows me to hear my surroundings better when running alone since I live in a high traffic area.
I’m very happy with the upgraded version of these earbuds and highly recommend!
