Product Description

A modern classic, SENNHEISER's reference class HD 800 headphones deliver sound that is as natural as possible and true in every detail. Improving on a seemingly perfect formula is not a task undertaken lightly, but SENNHEISER's engineers have succeeded in enhancing still further the sound reproduction in the open, circumaural HD 800 S. The striking industrial design combines form and function seamlessly, the layered metal and plastic headband construction attenuating vibrations to the ear cups while the handmade microfiber ear pads offer exceptional comfort for even long periods of listening enjoyment. Crafted for perfection, the HD 800 and the HD 800 S are precision built in Germany from only the finest materials and components. The transducer is encased by stainless steel, while the headband and headphone mounting utilizes the most advanced materials developed in the aerospace industry for high strength with minimal weight. The new HD 800 S offers even better high precision connectivity options and is now supplied with two connection leads, a 6. 3mm connector and a 4.4mm Pentacon balanced cable to offer even better quality sound from sources with balanced outputs such as the SENNHEISER HDV 820 headphones amplifier.

Sennheiser HD 800 S

It Has A Ring To It

The heart of the HD 800 S and its striking sound is the 56mm Ring Radiator transducer. It leverages the air displacement of a large speaker diaphragm without losing the rigidity of a smaller one. The result is hyper fast response for superb detail across the entire frequency range. The headphone’s vibration damping chassis and inert headband ensure that what you put into the HD 800 S is precisely what you will get out of it, too.

Each transducer is manufactured, tested, and measured to the tightest tolerance for the most dependable performance out of the box. Even the 40mm voice coil is wound in-house to ensure the shape and consistency is held to the highest standard. Each HD 800 S includes the frequency response plot unique to those perfectly matched transducers, sparing no resource to help you retrieve the most critical details from every corner of your music collection.

Sennheiser HD 800 S

Behind the Mask

Achieving acoustics that are true to the source also requires management of compounding frequency clusters that produce undesirable masking effects. Sennheiser integrated a patented frequency absorber to reduce resonances that hide extraordinary musical details in plain sight. Further, the transducer system is mounted in a vibration damping chassis using aerospace-grade materials. As a result the problematic energy peaks of lower frequencies are controlled to unveil the purity your hi-fi setup is capable of.

    Coming from a HD650
let me just say that i waited a month and hours and hours of listening before decided to put up a review. because i think something like this deserves a good attention of time before abruptly calling it a go.Pro: details and yet refined timbre. superb imaging and soundstage. extremely defined resolution provided if you have an up to task DAC/AMP. overall leveled response across the frequency spectrum.Con: only con i can think of is the price. although it's a instant noticeable upgrade from HD650, but is it a quantifiable 3~4 improvement? i don't know. it's hard to say especially in the subjective audio gear world.Let me just get this out of the way first. my previous headphones were Audio Technica AD900/AD900X, AD700, Sennheiser HD598/HD650. up to that point, HD650 was my go to can for music listening and even gaming. this is powered through Schiit Bifrost and a Bottlehead Crack. i never really understood the infamous Veil in the HD650. as to me, it was perfectly well presented. but when i put the HD800 S on, i could instantly tell the difference within the first 2 mins. between HD800 S and HD650, it makes HD650 seems like there is a cloud of smoke right in front of you in the mid range. the HD800 S lifted that cloud and brings an extra level of clarity BUT without the sibilant. it's an extra level of resolution and clarity right in front of your forehead that to me is the biggest and most immediate noticeable difference between the 650.Soundstage wise, since i am a huge fan of soundstage, the HD800 S can benefit from a good set of tubes. with my stock National Electronic 5963 driver tube, the soundstage was about equal as the 650. but because the 800 S has that extra layer of clarity and resolution, which makes it "seem" like it has a larger stage. but it wasn't until i swapped out the National Electronic 5963 with an RCA 5963, the soundstage really came to life. there is now more defined rolled off and a more obvious LIVE sound like you're at a concert, a very well defined reverb. for the power tube, i am currently using a Sylvania 6080wb, which paired with the 800 S sounds just about right. not too bright nor too dark. i tried a much talked about Russian 6AS7G Winged C tube, but was very unimpressed with the 800 S. it sounded too mushy and blurry. the Russian tube was used quite a bit with the HD800 crowd. but i suspect that with the HD 800 S, since they fine tuned the treble and bass, the Russian tube in this case seems almost over compensate and makes it feel too relaxed for my liking.Instrumental separation is kicked up a notch. although 650 already has a very well defined separation. the 800 S kicked it up a slight notch. i found some notes and instruments that jumped out more than before with the 650.Treble, surprisingly isn't as sibilant as i thought it would be. i was afraid that the treble would make me want to return the purchase coming from a 650, but in comparison to HD650, where the 650 had a few treble spikes that almost makes some of Michael Buble's tracks a bit painful to listen to, as well as Natalie Horler's vocal a bit painful to sit through. the HD 800 S although is on the brighter side overall, actually is smoother across those upper treble area that Michael/Natalie's vocals were not too hot and much smoother and enjoyable to listen to. now i can actually listen to those tracks and enjoy them.Bass, is less than HD650 obviously as i expected. but before the 800 S arrived, i was afraid that i would hate it so much that i would return it. but as it turned out, although it's less bass than 650 in terms of quantity, the authority it delivers seems on par, if not more precise. Just listen to a couple of Steve Tyrell's popular tracks or Karen Souza's "Creep", or "Bette Davis". it's obvious to me that the authority it delivers is NOT lacking at all, but very precise and not overreaching. although on most of the hip-hop and trance tracks is where you would notice a significant difference in terms of bass quantity compare to HD650.overall to sum it up. it's a HD650 on steroid and multiplied by many. but how many multiple of that is up to debate. as it is 3~4 times the MSRP of a 650, it's very subjective to each whether it's 3~4 times better. and that is the only Con i can think of for this can. other than that. i think everyone should enjoy their music with this headphone. unless if the only tracks you listen to is hip-hop.in terms of amplification. i see this gets asked a lot. just to give you an example. i swapped the DAC/AMP back and forth between the Schiiit Bifrost/Bottlehead Crack with a Solid State based Asus Xonar Essence STX. the difference is immediate and vast. the Xonar although no slouch, makes the HD800 S sound much smaller in soundstage, narrow, shrilling, and too fast and too harsh. switching back to the Bifrost and Bottlehead Crack, immediately the soundstage opened up to a live concert, open, more organic sounding mid treble and bass, and more separation. so there is your answer. yes, you will definitely need to invest in an adequate amp and dac for this.feel free to ask me questions. i'd be happy to answer.
