tiny pack with a big punch
After owning and using quite a bunch of 360º cameras I was really skeptical about the "next big thing" in the 360º realm. The last trap I fell into was believing that the Madventure was decent and boy, that was bad. This time I was wrong and the buzz was right, this is a really good product. If you want to skip all the details I’d recommend this camera and even more if you get it in a bundle and save money on it, like the ones already with the invisible stick,Camera+card or ALL but the kitchen sink (search Amazon to find those).I purchased the camera with my own funds, I have used it for several hours of video and multiple photos. I am a photographer and videographer and I use this device for interviews, behind the scenes videos, drone footage, hyperlapse and personal vlogs. The following is my honest impression and portrays the result of many hours of shooting and post.OVERALL: this is a great camera for its price and purpose. Image quality is very good, the software is easy to use and free, stabilization and other advanced features are amazing.SIZE: extra compact, the lenses and focal planes are really close and this results in great portability with superior stitching. I am still to find a fault on video and photo stitching, even with close subjects.SOUND: the camera offers 2 microphones for stereo capture, but no audio input. I wonder if a cleverly designed audio cable could be hidden using the invisible monopod, that would be amazing for better audio quality. The sound is ok, worse than a dedicated recording device, but still usable. It would be amazing if we could pair a Bluetooth microphone… but that’s just me getting greedy and trying to adequate it to my workflow, as I do interviews andBATTERY: it is not long-lasting with 1200mAh. If I could complain about anything this would be the only concern, it does not last long. But then I looked at the size of the kit and remembered it was to be expected. There is a good solution though since the Insta360 OneX does come with a replaceable battery and that makes it easy to carry some to replace on the go. THat is actually going to be necessary if you plan on doing video or taking many pictures during long periods without recharging. My optimal solution is multiple batteries and a double charger like this one https://amzn.to/2ZoIjhw.On my experience, I could make it last around 1 hour if using with Wi-Fi constantly on, about 4h if I kept wi-fi off and used it sparingly and without the phone connected. It charges fast, around 20-30 minutes from zero to full with a fast charger.STABILIZATION: Whoah! I was impressed by the results from the 6-axis gyro-based image stabilization, especially comparing with the lame MadVenture and other bad examples I’ve had in the past. I recorded smooth videos while walking on very bad terrain. As I moved and inevitably shook it quite good the videos still came buttery smooth. I am impressed and very happy with the results so far, I do think it is just as good as the amazing stabilization from the GoPro7 https://amzn.to/2XvNFFV.STITCHING: As I stated before, I have only found minor issues with the automatic stitching. It is very easy to stitch using the phone app, but I do prefer to put the card in a fast card reader and copy to my workstation, this way I have more options and control over the videos. I do not use the app to edit, but it is really simple and intuitive to use and make overcapture videos.EDITING: overcapture videos are very easy with the free app. You can also use most non-linear editing software (Final Cut, Premiere…) to edit natively and that is a game changer for me. No more need to stitch using my phone and then transfer to a messy After Effects workflow!ENVIRONMENTAL SEAL: it is not waterproof, you need a special case to protect it or even dive. That said and on your own risk, it is possible to use it in “splashy situations” without an issue. I’ve recorded videos near a waterfall without issues, I just tried to protect the open USB port and all was good. I take no responsibility if drown your camera, do it at your own risk.DESIGN: I found it to be great, functional and even pretty. Materials look and feel good, it is as premium as it should be expected with the price tag. The tiny LCD is a welcome bonus, you can actually get relevant data from it. The simple 2-button interface gets the simple tricks done, for anything fancier you should use the app. LEDs keep you aware of what is happening and most important: if it is still recording! The only issue I found with the design is that you cannot replace the microSD card without removing the camera from a tripod. That is not an issue for most people, only for those capturing many hours of interviews and needing to keep the camera without any movement. The easy solution was buying bigger cards, up to 128Gb.Size is 115 x 48 x 28 mm and it weighs 115g.IMAGE QUALITY: the lenses are quite fast (f2.0) and capture good light. Photo resolution is OK for consumer use with 18Mp and DNG capture, video resolution is nice at 5.7k. I write "nice" even though it is probably the best resolution on a consumer/prosumer camera to date because gorgeous 360º video requires 8k and more, but that would add bulk and a couple of thousand dollars to the equation. Higher frame rates would also be nice, making 5.7k slow motion even more amazing than it already is. Again, 5.7k at 30 fps and 100mbps is not shabby, it is just grumpy-old-me remembering the results from the Pro cameras I’ve tested and used. Very low light situations are a challenge for small sensors and this is no exception, image is not great under very low light. Even though ISO goes to a high 6400 I’d keep it as low as possible, never raising it over 400.CONTROLS:You can (and should) set sort-of-manual controls for ISO and shutter speed. If you want the best quality possible you should use the LOG mode and edit later to achieve the most from the footage and achieve the best result. HDR video is gorgeous and makes it simpler but you lose some control over the process, as it is all done automatically by the software.CONNECTIVITY: stupid-proof connection to any “moderately smart”phone, just connect to the Wi-Fi and open the app. The app is free and you can easily find it on the app store of your preference (Windows, Apple or Android). Downloading images is super-fast, videos can last a while but they are HUGE and that is to be expected. Consider connecting with the supplied cable to speed up the process and save battery.5G WiFi, Bluetooth LE 4.0, MFI-certified lightning connectorSOFTWARE: App and desktop version (Insta 360 Studio) are easy to use and intuitive, they do require some time to process long videos. Keep in mind we are talking Gigabytes of data; all that quality needs a big room to fit in. All versions are free to download on insta360's website or your preferred app store.FANCY STUFF AND FEATURES:- data Overlay: you can embed speed, elevation, incline angle, heading, coordinates… to your footage.- Freecapture and overcapture: film in 360 and present it as a regular video. You can change the view angle as if multiple cameras filmed the scene.- Picture in picture: you can capture a video as a smartphone does, with the image in front and a tiny box with your image as the action unfolded before you- Hyperlapse, timeshift, slow motion- Live streaming to Facebook and Youtube (I have not tested any other options, if they exist). You can even change the view live and make it a tiny planet or other viewing alternatives you fancy.- built-in GPS: data is stored in each capture- Loops: great IF you like the silly and annoying boomerang style- Wireless VR ViewingMY PREFERRED ACCESSORIES:- The included pouch is a must have and must use item. It protects the protruding and exposed lenses from getting scratched, not from bumps and hits. If you drop the camera in it damage is still possible.- extra batteries: mandatory if you plan to record multi-minute videos or capture many photos over long periods of time without recharging.- The invisible stick is great, easy to open and close, disappears from the images as magic. You can achieve an amazing “flying camera effect” using it. I would recommend that you purchase it as the second accessory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insta360 One is a GREAT camera!
Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2019
As an Amazon Prime shopper I usually get request from vendors to leave feedback. And often I don’t make time to do so (shame on me) but in this case I was planning to leave feedback on my experience with the Insta360 One X, but they beat me to it with a request. But I am happy to write this!

The Insta360 One X is an AMAZING camera, its going to change how you take and view pictures! You won’t regret purchasing this camera.

    That’s my short review.

Now for those of you still reading, here’s a more detail and thoughful review.

About 2 months ago a friend showed me this device he had just purchased, an Oculus Quest VR headset. Myself being an artist he showed me a 360 painting app which blew me away, and as played with the headset some more, I discovered YouTube had some 360 videos, I found one which was a night time walking tour of midtown Manhattan, New York from Lincoln Center to 42nd Street Time Square. After watching that on the Quest, I was sold on 360 video.

The Oculus Quest was a quick purchase and I wanted to shoot my own 360 videos as well. So I started doing the research, looking for reviews and of course, YouTube had tons of reviews and it seemed everyone was highlighting the Insta360 One X. After spending 3 weeks watching just about every video on 360 camera reviews, I concluded the Insta360 One X was worth trying and I am 100% happy that I purchased it. The price is affordable compared to other 360 cameras.

The Insta360 One X takes really GREAT videos and if you are a professional photographer then you’ll know how to mess with the settings to take AMAZING photos and videos. I am not a photographer, so I like my picture and video settings to be auto. If I have to start worrying about camera settings, I will lose interest fast.

Insta360 One X right out of the box is set up to take quality pictures. Just charge your battery, attach the camera to a selfie stick, turn it on and you’re good to go!

The app makes editing a breeze, its Mac friendly! At the moment I am aware of 3 places you can post your finish 360 videos, The Insta360 website, YouTube and Facebook. Looking at your videos online is great, you can move around and see things you didn’t even realized you shot. But the real magic happens when you put on a VR head set like the Oculus Quest and watch your video. I shot a video at the Los Angeles Comic Con a few weeks ago and its just amazing! The Insta360 One X captured everything! people walking around, in front of you, behind you (ever wonder what people are doing behind you while you are walking, now it’s no longer a mystery) you feel like you are in the space, its like being in a Star Trek Holodeck. The quality of the video is good enough that you can grab still shots from your video through the app as well.

I should mention, Facebook is a little buggy though with 360 video, it doesn’t always play nice with 360 content. The Oculus Quest can’t access 360 video posted on Facebook. By the way, Oculus is own by Facebook.

There are 2 professional 360 Youtube personalities who have detail reviews on the Insta360 One X as well as actual comparisons with other 360 cameras which might help you if you are still unsure, “Ben Claremont” and “360Rumors”, check them out.

I love my Insta360 One X camera, that said, there are a few things to note and one thing that bugs me, a lot.

If you plan on doing a lot of action shooting, you MUST purchase a Insta360 Venture Case. If you damage a len, I think its a $100 (+/-) fix plus a 2 to 3 week wait to get it back. But if you use the case, your audio will suffer. If you are familiar with Adobe Premiere (I hate Adobe subscriptions!) it is 360 friendly and works well with video from the Insta360 camera. You can record your audio with your phone using a lapel microphone and edited it in later. There are Youtube videos showing the process. If the audio isn’t important just use one of the many audio clips in the Insta360 app.

The Insta360 Bullet Time Bundle is another must (though most selfie sticks will work if they have a camera mount). The bullet time tripod stand allows you to take those cool Matrix like videos. But, if you plan on using the tripod, Purchase an additional, better one. I bought a “Smatree Telescoping Selfie Stick with Tripod Stand”, not for the selfie stick but for the stand. I’ve posted photo comparisons. The Insta360 tripod isn’t very stable and it feels like it will fall over easily. The Smatree tripod legs are longer and it attaches to the insta360 selfie stick. The Insta360 stick is better because its longer (see pictures). If you want to hide the tripod leg create a Nadir. The Insta360 app makes it easy to add one.

Once you discover how much fun you’re going to have with your Insta360, you might want to purchase additional batteries since the battery will give you about 45 minutes of power. And if you are like me, you might want to leave the camera on as much as possible which means you will need a couple of additional memory cards as well (128gb, don’t your time buying less).

As to the thing that BUGS me. The app or I should say the apps!

The app works or I should say, they work. The mobile app and the desk top app don’t have matching features!!! How insane is that. Insta360 really needs to revisit the apps and make them one. And while they are at it, give us the ability to edit videos together on the timeline with transitions, and audio editing too! (Help me get Adobe out of my life for good!) And while you’re at it more music clips to choose from (I like what you have but it never hurts to have more).

I am still using my iPhone 5S and the Insta360 app is not compatible with that version you need a newer model. The app aside from editing, allows you to control the camera wirelessly. I don’t have any plans to spend $800 to $1000 on a new phone, am tempted but its not going to happen any time soon. I’ve seen pictures of a wireless Insta360 One X remote and a few people have claimed to have purchased it. I can’t find it anywhere. I feel like am looking for a unicorn. I am not sure if it really exist or am I seeing some good 3D rendering effects from hard core fan of the camera. If you have an older phone and are not planning on upgrading anytime soon, be prepared to be editing out video of yourself starting and stopping the camera. It’s not hard using the app, just annoying. I should mention if you have a tablet from the last year or so, you might be able to use the app on it. Check the specs.

So that’s my review. I absolutely love this camera and combining it with a VR headset takes it to a whole other level. There’s no doubt in my mind the 360 is the near future of picture and video taking. Image going on vacation, shooting 360 video, coming back home and playing it for family and friends through a head set.

Insta360 One X camera is fun to use, and its potential is endless.
