There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
But when I stumbled across this unit, I saw that the developers had thought of things I had not yet realized I needed.
The integral touchpad means no separate mouse to handle or mousing surface to find.
The compact size has been an improvement I didn't expect. Easier to carry/handle. No loss in effectiveness or convenience.
The rechargeable Li-ion battery means no more AA's. Plenty of useful life on a single charge.
The (nearly hidden) extra left click button on the upper left is a clever feature that I haven't taught myself to use as often as it would come in handy. And the shortcut/Fn keys are thoughtful/organized enough that for the first time I am actually learning their location.
The two finger scrolling on the touchpad is such an improvement over the touchpad edge scrolling that I am used to with my laptops.
The backlit keys are well thought out also, and even provide a low light level when the unit knows it is in a dark room.
The only problem I have had is with a default setting in Windows. What was happening was the KB would get into a zombie state overnight sometimes. It would show as paired but not connected to the computer, like it was out of range. It appeared to be related to the battery level of the KB, but it would happen before I ever saw the recharge warning on the KB--and was a real pain to make reconnect. But before I gave up the ship I found some good advice online (after the usual 90% bogus advice) that showed a default power management setting was letting Windows 'turn off the device to save power' (but the KB apparently never got that memo). Unclick the check box and no problems, just happiness, since. [Device Mgr>>Bluetooth>>Intel Wireless Bluetooth>>Properties>>Power Mgmt>>uncheck box]
The exception to that would be the now defunct Lenovo N5902 with backlighting. The problem with that remote is the very poor durability and failure rate combined with bad range or simply buggy connectivity issues. The buttons malfunction erratically. And don't even think of dropping it. This is why it is no longer manufactured. It's too bad they never made a solid model based on that design as it would have been the ultimate small sized htpc keyboard remote.
The other next bast option is the Logitech K400 keyboard. It is the predecessor to this keyboard and is probably the most popular htpc keyboard on the market. The biggest flaw with that one is the lack of backlight. Some don't care about that but it renders the item quite useless as a family htpc remote if anybody else needs to use it and isn't familiar with a keyboard layout without looking at it. And lets face it, that is the vast majority of people. And most people don't use an htpc in a well lit room for the most part. Another major flaw is the placement and small size of the right shift key. If you are use to typing on a standard keyboard, you WILL be hitting the up key instead of the right shift key. It is a major annoyance.
PROS and CONS of the K830
PROS:
- Very good range. Zero connectivity issues. No erratic behavior do to connectivity or range.
- Smaller than than the K400.
- Bigger trackpad and better button placement, including the volume buttons, than on the K400.
- Standard key layout including the right shift button. The direction keys are much more distinct for more intuitive media control.
- More solid feel than the K400. Better ergonomic feel in your hand. It feels like it was built to be held like a remote rather than placed on a desk for typing.
- Upper left mouse click button in combination with trackpad on right side lets you hold the keyboard in two hands and use it like a mouse remote rather than a keyboard.
- The back light is phenomenal.
- The rechargeable battery lasts a surprisingly long time considering the backlight. It last and lasts.
CONS:
- It's a lot more pricey than the K400 or most other options. If you don't care about the major gripes I have with the K400, at 1/5th the cost it would be a no brainer to go with the K400.
- The new software is called Logitech Options and is much less robust and buggier than the Logitech Setpoint software. The pointer options don't consistently work and need to be used in conjunction with OS system options. As of one week of ownership I am unable to get the mouse pointer track speed to save after reboot. Others have this problem and I'm still troubleshooting it.
Top reviews from other countries
Range is great... keys light up nicely for working in the dark with media content, and the trackpad works well as a mouse replacement. The form factor is great for use on your knees. Keys feel nice to type on and while it's not "full travel" it doesn't feel like a horrible chicklet keyboard (I'm looking at you Apple).
The only thing I'n not keen on is the slightly aggressive 2 finger scrolling, but I'm used to the Apple magic trackpad which is the gold standard. I'm sure its as good as any PC trackpad you may have used ;-)
I have had for about a wk & I bought this to use on HTPC & it works great!! Installation was a snap!... I even have the PC in a different room at least 20ft from kybrd, through a wall & for me this device works flawlessly without any noticeable skipping or lag!! I downloaded the PC app for custom adjustments And have played with a few . Particularly the touchpad swipe sensitivity. My wife found it was too sensitive after I had adjusted the sensitivity up. I adjusted it back down considerably & think we are near the sweet spot. Super convenient & reliable so far , would hate to be without it with my setup.
