The Complete Studio To GoDon’t be fooled by its size — this little studio is loaded! The MTR (Multi-Track Recorder) mode offers 64 V-Tracks with eight simultaneous playback tracks. In addition, a dedicated stereo rhythm track is provided, as well as an onboard library of great grooves to choose from. The intuitive user-interface continues the simple-to-use tradition of BOSS’ acclaimed BR series, with a graphical design that follows the layout of a conventional recording console. With EQ, reverb, and mastering tools plus, world-class COSM amps and effects for guitar, bass, and vocals the MICRO BR BR-80 is ready to deliver complete, pro-quality recordings with ease. |
Virtual Jam BandThe MICRO BR BR-80’s eBand mode offers musicians a fun way to play along with their favorite songs. With the bundled eBand Song List Editor software, you can import CD, MP3, and WAV audio files from a computer via USB. The Center Cancel function can be used to minimize the volume of pre-recorded vocals and solos for play- and sing-along enjoyment. eBand mode is also an excellent partner for musical training, as it lets you record your performance adjust playback speed and/or pitch as desired. |
Built-In Stereo MicIn combination with the onboard high-grade stereo condenser microphones, the MICRO BR BR-80’s Live Rec mode lets you capture pristine stereo recordings instantly. Record vocals, guitar parts, and song ideas the moment inspiration strikes. Your recorded audio files can be easily imported into the MICRO BR BR-80’s MTR mode to use as a basis for multi-track song production. |
High-Quality Multi FXThe MICRO BR BR-80 is packed with professional multi-effects powered by a newly developed custom DSP chip. Over 40 types of COSM amp models give you instant access to a wide range of powerful guitar and bass sounds. The preset patches allow first-timers and pros alike to enjoy high-quality sounds immediately, while power users can tweak parameters in micro detail for the ultimate tonal control. The dedicated vocal effects, comparable with BOSS’s popular VE-20, include doubling, harmony effects, pitch correction, and more. |

Here are some highlights of the MTR mode:
-- 8 simultaneous playback tracks
-- 64 v-tracks, so you can store multiple alternate takes etc.
-- built-in drum machine with selectable drumkits
-- COSM modeling for input effects (guitar amp modeling etc.)
-- a remarkably useable 'bass emulator' mode for electric guitar (so you only have to carry one guitar around)
-- editable parameters for all channels (level, eq (3-band, sweepable mid), pan, reverb, solo/mute)
-- editable of input effects (e.g. control of compression, distortion, modulation, delay etc. for all modeled effects, and the ability to save revised effects as user patches)
-- much more - I'm still finding out all it can do.
Is it perfect? Of course not. There are missing features that would be great to have - editable drum patterns (if you want to use other than the built-in patterns, you need to create them on a PC and import them as SMF files), send effects other than just reverb, and so on. And as other users have noted, it's in no way a replacement for a real DAW setup. But it's not supposed to be. It's supposed to meet 2 (or 3) very specific needs, and it does that extremely well.
The slow down feature is pretty sweet. My band plays some covers and I was having difficulty picking out a part as it was very fast. I slowed it down and was able to resolve what was being played.
But the really nice thing is it has me playing my guitar more and you certainly aren't going to get better while not playing.
And to that person, my only peeve - the rotating knob is hard to use, takes two fingers to operate effectively, but it can be done without any problem if you are just a bit more deliberate than you ought to be.
But it is rich with features in a very small package and the UI is entirely counter-intuitive. I am a professional technologist and I've used several other recorders (usually Tascam) but I just haven't got the patience or time to figure out how to get this thing to record the way I need to and the manual isn't very helpful either, making you constantly skip around and then try to put all the fragmented pieces together.
Too late to return it now, or I would. Keeping in my little studio out because of the great rhythm tracks for practicing, but it has not fulfilled my expectations for recording.

Track recording, if you have done it before elsewhere, is also fairly simple. However, for the complete novice, producing a final mix does require frequent reference to the manual and is quite tricky. I feel that this is due to what they have packed into such a tiny device, using cusor type arrows and a selector wheel to make choices. I also feel that with HD colour screens on phones becoming pretty much the standard, the monochrome display provided is very old fashioned, but having said that, it is reasonably functional once you get the hang of it.
The sound quality is excellent but I haven't blasted the results through anything more powerful than a practice amp .
It's great that this is literally a handheld device, and I have small hands but to make it a centimetre wider and broader would probably allow for a better control layout and a better screen...perhaps even colour, and I dont think it would detract from its deminutive portability. As a quality recording device it is at the inexpensive end of the market and adding a few extra pounds for a better display would raise it high above the opposition.
Would I buy it again... certainly.
