4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 161 ratings

When a strange accident gives civil engineer Mitchell Hundred the amazing ability to control machinery, he uses his newfound powers to become the world's first living, breathing superhero. But the thrill of risking his life simply to help maintain the status quo eventually wears thin, leading Mitch to retire from masked crime-fighting in order to run for Mayor of New York City--an election he wins by a landslide.

And that's when the real weirdness begins.

Before it's over, the lives of Mayor Hundred and everyone around him will be turned upside down and inside out--and the very fate of humanity will turn on his actions. Will the man who stopped the second plane on 9/11 be able to resist the incalculably greater threat now looming on the horizon? Or will he prove to be the ultimate example of the corrupting nature of power?

Science fiction thrills collide with explosive political drama in this critically acclaimed tale from renowned writer Brian K. Vaughan and legendary artist Tony Harris--assembled here for the first time in a single hardcover volume!
Ex Machina: The Complete Series Omnibus collects all 50 issues of the Eisner Award-winning title as well as the four Ex Machina Specials (featuring guest artists John Paul Leon, Chris Sprouse and Karl Story), and includes an introduction by New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer and a special behind-the-scenes section detailing the series' unique development.

I don't believe comics should be aa platform for social change. I remember the GA/GL team up where they traveled the country with GA lecturing GA on every page. This series deals with social issues but they all been settled in the past and now it seems comical that they were ever an issue ie ga marriage or legal reefer. As a mayor 100 seems like a great mayor especially when compared to the moron running NY now. Finally, some series get worse over time and just fade away. This series is good to the end! If you like this try BKZ's series Y. It takes it's place with the best post apocalypse stories in fiction.

This is one of the few books I feel comfortable recommending to close friends with full confidence they will like it. This volume is of course a beast of an all in one spectacular. I obviously haven't reread the entirety of it since it came in the mail this afternoon, but after a few issues in its like rediscovering the series again for the first time.

The series is great. It definitely ran the risk of being just awful based on the premise, but it just works, and of course, the final page is a giant "what if?" that will probably enrage at least a few random folks.

If you like convenient reading, grab the trades or the deluxe hardcovers, if you like a single entire story between a front and back cover, you will be happy with this.

Fantastic content. The complete set is a little overwhelming to handle in a single binding.

It’s great, but really weird. And VERY mature. This is definitely an adult comic full of gore, profanity, and nudity. The story is interesting and all the characters are witty enough to keep you invested in what’s happening. Really solid series.

I came to this comic late and being able to get the full series and see the back issues is amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent art, great story-telling, War and Peace dimensions
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 1, 2021
Having bought this on the strength of some good reviews, I can happily report that it exceeded expectations on all fronts. This massive tome, more than 3 inches (7.5 cm) thick and running to 1,440 pages, collects issues 1-50 and 4 specials, of the Ex Machina comic book, publication of which began in 2004. As an omnibus collection of a monthly comic book, I had expected it to be episodic, as most such collections are. In fact, what you have here reads much more like one continuous narrative, essentially a single, albeit huge, graphic novel. And what a page-turner it is too. Author, Brian K. Vaughan, has a real flair for creating believable characters and introducing us to them in such a way that we genuinely grow to care about them, even when we may not necessarily like them.
The story takes place in a world that is recognisably our own, albeit with a few key differences, foremost among which is the existence of the central character, this world's only bona fide human being with something like super-powers, albeit tech-enhanced ones, hence the Machina of the title. Off the back of the notoriety gained through his heroics, he decides to broker a career as a politician. Everything that comes after is a direct consequence of this decision and how the main protagonist, his friends, enemies, colleagues, political allies and opponents, and the media, deal with it.
While appearing to be a super-hero story, there's a lot more going on here. It's a political thriller, a story about human relationships, and an extended meditation on the state of the world, and in particular America, post-9/11. In these respects, and in terms of its length, it warrants comparison with War and Peace. Ex Machina is much more readable though.
The reality of the setting and the inherent believability of the characters and their actions are what carry us through the twists and turns of the tale, keep us guessing, keep us caring and keep us wanting to know what is going to happen next. This reality is ably assisted by the excellent artwork of primary penciller, Tony Harris, and his similarly gifted support team of inkers and colourist. Their artwork enhances the storytelling beautifully, exactly as it should. Realistic but not photo-realistic, artistic without being overtly arty. In other words, about as good as graphic novel art ever gets.
So, genuinely gripping from start to finish. You might want to build up your arm muscles with some dumbbell exercises before tackling it though ... it is a seriously weighty volume! Honestly, if I was publishing it, I'd have split it into two volumes, maybe in a slip case....

5.0 out of 5 stars BIG book of beauty

This is a HUGE book! While it is glued binding, so far it seems very sturdy unlike other comics I have where the binding glue seems weak. The pictures are without the dust jacket. As for the story, I’ve only started reading it but it’s excellent so far. The story is really engaging and I love how it’s not your typical superhero story. It’s like if spiderman unmasked himself, ran for mayor and was told he wasn’t allowed to use his powers. But this guy can talk to any type of machinery and control it like stopping trains or forcing a gun to jam etc... Can’t wait to read more.
