How transparently does this mic record classical guitar?

Product Description
Classic sound, by any standards. The sE2200 is the latest version of the award-winning cardioid condenser microphone that first put sE Electronics on the map many years ago with its smooth, polished sound for vocals, voiceovers, and instrumental applications.
The sE2200 is the latest version of the award-winning cardioid condenser microphone that put sE Electronics on the map many years ago with its smooth, polished sound for vocals, voiceovers, and numerous instrumental applications. Made famous through use with world-class vocal artists like Amy Winehouse, it revives the spirit of classic studio microphones, and still remains a standard in mic lockers around the world.
Given the revered status of its predecessors, sE has remained true to the original capsule design, custom-built transformer and class-A circuit topologies, so it’s still the same condenser microphone loved by a whole generation of engineers. State-of-the-art components and a shorter, optimized signal path provide even better noise performance & clarity, new pad & filter options increase its versatility, and the fit & finish has been updated with sE’s latest manufacturing techniques - but the sE2200 retains all the classic sound of the original.
"When in doubt on how to get the tone I'm looking for, I always try this mic first, and rarely need to reach for a second."
- Josh Turner, Singer / Arranger / Multi-Instrumentalist / Engineer

CUSTOM-DESIGNED, HAND-CRAFTED CAPSULEAlthough the sE2200 is a cardioid-only microphone, two (instead of one) gold-sputtered diaphragms are used to ensure best possible acoustic performance. Built like the world’s finest musical instruments, every capsule is hand-crafted and individually tuned in our very own factory in Shanghai - and unlike other microphones with backplate or electret designs, the sE2200 features a true externally polarized condenser capsule, and therefore delivers the best possible performance in every aspect. |
TRADITIONAL CLASS-A ELECTRONICS AND CUSTOM TRANSFORMERIts carefully selected, discrete components ensure brilliant sound quality on any source. The sE2200’s design still avoids using any ICs (integrated circuits) and is built to excel – not to a standard. Low noise, consistent performance and high sensitivity is provided by state-of-the-art surface-mounted electronic components with extremely tight tolerances. Reviving the spirit of classic studio microphones, the sE2200’s custom transformer provides superb depth & weight to the overall sonic image, and the massively shielded metal housing ensures noise-free operation. |
TWO SWITCHABLE ATTENUATION PADS AND LOW-CUT FILTERSThe -10 dB and -20 dB pad switches provide extended dynamic range, enabling a wide variety of applications and close-mic techniques for even the loudest instruments...think super-heavy electric guitars, fortissimo brass instruments, and heavy-footed kick drums. Selectable at either 80Hz or 160Hz, the two low-cut filters help eliminate low-frequency rumble or footfall noise, as well as help compensate for excessive bass (proximity effect) with close-mic techniques. |
The sE2200 provides brilliant sound quality for both vocals and instruments alike.

ALL-METAL HOUSING & PREMIUM FINISHUnlike the cheaply constructed bodies of some other affordable microphones, the sE2200's all-metal chassis provides efficient rejection of any electrical interference and noise - and the high-quality finish ensures a great look for years to come. |
GOLD-PLATED XLR CONNECTOREnsures loss-free, reliable signal connection for years and years. |
INCLUDES THE ISOLATION PACKFor situations where greater rumble control and ‘plosive protection is desired, this bundle also includes sE’s Isolation Pack. With the twist of a single knob, the mount attaches quickly and securely to the microphone, and is removable with the same simple motion. This allows the mic to be set up quickly and easily - no adjustments, no hassle. The Isolation Pack also comes equipped with sE's curved metal pop filter, which efficiently slots in to the shockmount and is vertically adjustable for best performance. |

The visual similarities to the classic AKG 414 are obvious. (414's go for what, $1,600? $2,000?) This isn't the current, relatively bright but very good AKG 414. It has a little bit more tube-ish, ribbon-ish, mellower character to it.
I've recorded some things and played around with the results since I got it. I bought it at the same time as an LCT 440 Pure. They're both good mics but have essentially opposite philosophies. I feel like the se4400 is going to give me a good tone straight out of the mic but with a reserved upper register - it is then my job go find, on the eq, what high parts I might want to emphasize, if I feel that is neccessary. With the LCT 440, it's going to give you everything and it is up to you to subtract from it. It has some warmth but is also a very airy mic. I find the se4400 a little easier to get quick results from when eqing. It's just easier to add a bump in the upper eq where you find a sweet spot than trying to figure out what to subtract and leave in.
Generally I feel really confident with this mic doing vocal takes and acoustic guitar that I am going to get a good recording. I happen to use pennywhistles, recorders, and similar instruments in my music and having a non-hyped upper end is a real plus there.
If you're looking for a poor man's AKG 414, this isn't exactly it, but in my case I felt like I got something that suited me a little better than a 414 would have. I'm sure you could save a parametric EQ setting with a shelf in the upper range, perhaps a few other tweaks and get a pretty decent approximation.
Or look at some of the LCT products if you want a poor man's 414. I only wish the sE mics came with the same kind of built-in magnetic pop filter as the LCT's. Personally though, I wouldn't give up my se4400 up for a 2nd LCT. I did a LOT of research listening to endless mic shootouts on youtube with reference headphones and, within my particular budget, purposely paired these two mics because of their different characters - I like to alternate vocal takes, acoustic guitar takes, etc with these two - both are going to give you excellent material out of the mic, assuming your mic technique is good, but different takes on these two get out of each others' way without too much tweaking.
original date 4/4/, update 5/16/18 still super happy with this mic.
I use the microphone for recording acoustic guitar and vocals. If you position the microphone 4 feet away at 45°, pointed at an angle at the guitar, the sound is excellent.
The part of the microphone that attaches to the stand is easy to use. One note: there is a screw screwed into the plastic fitting that attaches to the stand. If you cannot figure out how to adapt this piece to your microphone stand, look for that screw, which can be removed to create a different fitting.
I put the microphone away in the box when not using it so that it does not gather dust. It is extremely easy to put together and put away.
Another thought (most people already know), remember to plug the microphone in completely before powering up your audio adapter, and to fully power down the audio adapter before unplugging the microphone. I turn the volume down on the audio adapter, turn off the audio adapter, and then unplug the microphone. Hope this helps. I’m giving this microphone five stars. I would buy it again in a minute.
AT2035 at $94 is total steal, but it's going back. Sorry, Audio Technica.
And, oh, don't worry about condenser mic picking up background noise or reverberation. I tried it in the kitchen with no room treatment at all obviously, and it sounded just fine with mic 6" away from my mouth.
