- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2020This laptop answers everything I wanted from a laptop: Good Processor, Graphics card of some sort, Decent Ram, Some Upgradability, Touchscreen with HD screen, backlit keyboard, USB C, ports other than USB C, Thin, Metal form factor. This laptop is great but it can be even better if you are capable of opening it!
I purchased 1.5tb worth of SSD storage (500GB NVME[Must support SATA], and 1TB 2.5") and added it to the system. You will have to get your own NVME Screw. That upgrade alone made it very fast and allowed me to take full advantage of the I7 and GTX1050. While there are better laptops now, In 2019, it was one of the only thin computers with this combination under $1000. RAM is not upgradable, but 8GB should be sufficient for the lifespan of the laptop.
The USB C port is not thunderbolt 3 and requires the dock/dongle to support VESA DisplayPort Alt-Mode to output HDMI. The ACER dock ADK621 is a good fit for this laptop and works with no issues. Bluetooth and Wifi worked great.
Battery life is decent, with me usually averaging 6-7 hours at college taking notes or studying online but 2-4 hours if I am gaming or doing Photoshop or Premiere work. The key to achieving the battery life I am achieving is making sure only the apps that need to use the GTX1050 are allowed to use it. Most of my daily applications like Discord, Microsoft Office, File Explorer, Groove Music, Photos App, Chrome, Steam, and other typical services are set to use the Intel graphics only. If you do not set these restrictions, you will have a terrible battery life as your computer will try to use the GTX1050 for everything. When a Windows 10 update had wiped all the graphics settings I had set, I went from 6-7 hours to 1-2 hours. This is something that can be applied to any computer with a graphics card you buy.
I did have an issue where the fan shroud started grinding on the fan and it made the laptop loud. This is a common problem with Acer laptop fans of this time it appears. Luckily it was in warranty and they fixed it in less than 2 weeks. I have not had thermals problems since. I will say that the repair process was not done very well as I could see that they had ripped a speaker cable but fixed it with tape, and I received my laptop with some additional scratches, but I could not determine if it was their fault or the shipping. They also formatted my hard drive. They mentioned on the chat that it would be a possibility but didn't think they would have since the hard drive I sent them was the factory hard drive that was only ever used to download a cloning software to copy all the factory data to the SSD. Other than this hiccup, I had no other issues with this laptop.
As for the included software, It does not have too much bloatware, but the few Acer apps aren't annoying. They don't do too much except for the Acer Care Center which will check for driver updates and do battery and hard drive tests upon request. Amazon Alexa is ok but seems to be limited compared to the phone, echo variants.
The included Pen is excellent and works great, it has pressure detection and can make your 15.6" screen a Canvas. The pen uses a non-rechargeable but replaceable AAAA battery. Spare tips are included. The Dolby Audio is good. The speakers are loud and the headphone jack is very clear too. The charger is 90W and charges the laptop in 3 hours from empty. It is not type-C, but you can get a Type C charger if you find one with high enough wattage. The backlight is white only, but at least it is present. The keyboard also feels nice to type on. I like the shortcut that allows you to turn off the backlight. It's useful if you are trying to pay attention to the teacher and aren't using the laptop immediately but don't also want to close it. You can still see the image if you shine a light on the screen. If you forget, it will return the normal by moving the cursor. The brightness adjustments seemed flip as the hollowed sun means to brighten and the solid sun means darken. The touchpad is ok, but not the most premium feeling. The fingerprint scanner is a little slow but works well most of the time. Sometimes if you log in with a pin instead, you won't get another option to use the fingerprint sensor until you restart the computer(Not Sleep/Hibernate). I am unsure if it is an issue with windows or the bios.
I am completely satisfied with this laptop and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good College computer that can boost a little more when gaming. This is a cousin to the ACER Nitro Spin 5 and has the same specs but just a different color. If you don't want to look like a gamer, this is the better option!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2019Bought this as a replacement for an aging laptop that could no longer meet my needs (light CAD/architectural software, photo editing, gaming, research/reading) all while being portable and *relatively lightweight. After having spent 3 months with it, I feel that I can write a review that encapsulates my experience broken into hardware then user experience. I'll start off with a brief pro/con, if you want to keep reading, I've expanded further below that list broken into hardware and user experience.
Pros:
-Relatively light and portable
-Battery life is middling (depending on task and connections)
-Switching between tablet, tent, and laptop mode is quick
-Keyboard is an okay surface
-M.2 capability is a plus, allowing it to be upgraded further
-Discrete GPU is good
-Backlighting
-USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 (this means there is an USB-C port but does not support the new thunderbolt spec, so no eGPU or monitor connections here)
-Plenty of USB gen 3 ports (Type A plug) 2 on left and one on right
-Ability to upgrade to SSD and to use an M.2
Cons:
-Keyboard is a bit squashed
-Input lag on touchscreen keyboard
-Loud fans
-Bad audio quality
-Bad microphone capability
-RAM is soldered on, so you are stuck with the default configuration you ordered.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hardware:
- Battery life is just shy of what is listed, however, this is due to having tweaked settings that would drain the battery faster than what they tested at. If you are thinking of playing a somewhat GPU dependent game, cut your battery life in half. Overall though, it is sufficient. I was able to use this in tablet mode doing some reading and writing and managed 4 hours before worrying about finding an outlet [35%] (nonstop use with bluetooth connections and music playing).
- The discrete GPU is sufficient for some light to moderate gaming, I would not recommend it for heavy gamers wanting the highest graphical settings or the more demanding titles. Under load, the fans are quite loud, when I'm gaming, I use headphones so it isn't an issue for me, but during photo editing it does get annoying during export. While I wish this had the Max-Q variant like the 1070/1080 has, it does the job.
- Having to manually swap out the HDD for an SSD was a bit difficult and annoying, I really wish that this came with an M.2 option with SSD. That being said, there is an M.2b (?) slot that can be used.
- The RAM it comes with is sufficient, however the lack of upgradability means that if future software/OS requires more, you're gonna have to purchase a new laptop instead of adding more modules or swapping them out for higher capacities.
User Experience:
- Keyboard could use a bit of tweaking, my fingers are a tad fat so the arrow keys are really awkward for me to use as I'd accidentally hit another key instead. The chiclet keys are nice to type on and have a nice resistance (I usually prefer a mechanical keyboard, but this is nice from a mobile standpoint). The backlighting could be implemented better as there is no way to tell the computer to change the time it stays on.
- The touchscreen is nice, gets smudged easily, but that is what you pay for having a touchscreen. It is responsive enough, there is sometimes a very slight input lag depending on how fast you type on the touchscreen keyboard.
- Audio wise, it's really meh. The sound is not very good, very "tinny" sounding speakers with their orientation facing up instead of down. The bass is pretty bad to nonexistent. Granted, this is a transforming laptop so concession was made on the speakers for the price.
- The microphone is crap, unless you boost the gain in the Win10 settings menu, the microphone will not pick up your voice unless you are speaking very clearly and loudly, almost into the screen.
Overall, I would recommend this for a student or for someone who is on the go. Don't expect really great performance or hardware specs, this laptop is solidly in the middle of the pack in terms of user experience and hardware. The battery drain is manageable provided you aren't using the dedicate GPU the entire time and the audio can always be ignored in favor of headphones if you want to listen to music. The ability for tablet mode and tent mode makes it much easier to use in reading documents or literature even though the onscreen keyboard suffers slight input lag. This isn't aimed at the professional working crowd, nor is it aimed at the heavy gamers or designers. It's meant for people who may casually do one thing or another without needing extra hardware.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2020Update:
I’ve had it since 2020. And it was good for about a year then it started to slow down. Mind you, I only play the games pre installed very rarely but used it mainly for YouTube videos to show to class, office and zoom meets. It’s now 2024 and it is becoming more and more frustrating to use. It updates so often that every time I am about to use it it takes more than 1 hr to fully function, wifi connection always goes on error and I have to trouble shoot it most of the time. My Dell took 12 yrs to finally go slow, I should’ve upgraded to Dell or hp instead which is what I’m getting after this one. Costumer service is not that great either. DO NOT BUY ACER COMPUTER!
Had to buy a computer because my dell xps that I’ve used for 12+ years decided to not work properly anymore during my zoom class. I was choosing between this or the hp envy but I’ve decided to get his one because of the price and it has better components than hp. Battery wise, it doesn’t last as long as the description say but charges pretty quickly. I’d say about a couple and a half hours to 3 if you are streaming videos. Less than that if you are to play games and maybe 4-5 for doing office stuff or browsing the Internet. It is light weight and I can open it with one hand. Touch screen is very responsive. It doesn’t come with a pen(it would have been nice if it does) but it is what it is. I’m not a heavy gamer and I use it mainly for office work and zoom meetings.

2.0 out of 5 stars Computadora defectuosa
Lastima.
