- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2024The phone is advertised as unlocked, working on AT&T. "Unlocked and compatible with carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Straight Talk, MetroPCS, Cricket wireless, simple mobile, and others". With the SIM card in it AT&T texted me (don't ask me how) that it was incompatible with their network. Would not connect at all. Returning.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2020I bought this phone. Eeverything worked until something didn't.
For some odd reason, i could make and receive calls and send text messages but i couldn't receive them! i tried everything with this phone and called my company (Verizon) and we did all sort of trouble shooting but receiving text messages never worked
that's why i am returning it. and they made me pay for shipping. Not a good service if you ask me
Keep in mind that if you have verizon, Something might end up not working with this phone
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2018I usually set out with very specific criteria for new phones (i.e. small, no bigger than 5 inches), so not very many fit the bill these days. This phone is great, has a wonderful camera, fingerprint sensor has been working without issue, phone doesn't generally run hot but occasionally does. It is quite immensely thick. Screen is nice and fingerprint/smudge resistant as much as it could be. Speakers are good as well. Battery life has been meeting expectations. Only other thing I will say is that I often put my finger on the camera when I'm trying to put it on the fingerprint sensor...
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2019Sadly I could only give one star due to the fact that I was not able to use the phone at all! If I could I probably would have given it amazing reviews...the problem was the phone was advertised and states that it works with Verizon. I called/went to 3 different places (amazon, Sony, Verizon, and best buys tech support) and no one could help me. Both Verizon and Sony said that I was misinformed about the product. I was really disappointed because I loved the size and feel of the phone. Also I was not given a full refund back. About $12 (give or take) was not given back. Probably due to shipping, but that's not my fault that the product was falsely advertised...
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2020I am so sad Sony is discontinuing the XZ2 compact! My previous one got stolen, and I really had to search to find one that ships id South Africa. My previous one was moss green, and the new one is coral pink. I was apprehensive about the pink, but it was the only colour available, however now that I have it, i love it. It is far more rose gold than pink. It is the perfect size, and the performance and camera are great
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2020On paper, and admittedly, often in use, there's no debating this is a pretty good phone. I bought it because I'm one of the hold-outs on the phablet trend, and this was the first time in years I didn't feel like I was making a huge sacrifice in specs in order to do so. It does have great battery life. It is really snappy. All that stuff is true.
But after some time, a lot of annoyances have cropped up. Things that you only notice after you've owned a phone for a while, and which none of the tech reviews really prepare you for. The Xperia XZ2 Compact definitely feels like design-by-committee, and its combination of intrusive software and frustrating construction make is fairly unpleasant to live with.
If this were a cheaper phone, I'd probably give it a little more leeway in my rating. But this is a phone that's still selling for $450 even 2 years after release. In light of that somewhat dizzying price tag, all of these errors are less forgivable. If you want to sell a dated phone for half a grand, it better be basically flawless in terms of daily use. And this is not.
The screen seems unusually fragile compared to every other smartphone I've had. Every little thing seems to scratch it. It's so sensitive to scratching that half the time I don't even know how it happened. But there's relatively few options for screen protectors because of its weird 4-sided curve, and the speaker being right in the middle of the forehead. Even if you can get one, it doesn't stick for very long.
The phone makes this weird grinding noise when you put it on speaker or play music or video. There's something misaligned near the speaker that causes it to do this, and this is a very common problem with this model. Some of them have it really badly. Mine is intermittent, and seems to come and go of its own accord.
The placement of the on/off button is absolutely infuriating. It's dead-center on the right side of the phone and very pronounced. What this means is that every time you try to reach across the screen, you turn it off. If you try to place it into any sort of grip, like a car mount or a tripod, it presses the button and turns it off. Basically, the on/off button is exactly in the spot where literally everything is constantly pressing it.
And you also can't really avoid this problem by shifting up or down, because above it is the volume rocker and below it is the camera button. So basically the entire right side of full of buttons. And on the left side and the top? Nothing. Why couldn't at least one of these be moved literally anywhere else so there was some way of actually gripping this phone without constantly setting off the buttons?
It's also probably the most slippery phone I've ever owned. I hear its big brother is even worse, which is hard to comprehend. Despite its relatively small size and that I've been able to get a firm purchase on phones this size in the past, this one is forever slipping out of my hands. This issue is exacerbated by the fact that I can't apply a firm hold to it without turning the phone off.
It's thick. The thickest smartphone I've ever owned, and I got my first back in 2010. Combined with the curved back, that means it often doesn't fit inside grips like those aforementioned -- it sort of rolls right back out again, because it's chunkier than the grip is expecting, and the back being curved means it won't mount flat, so it just slides out.
Speaking of the back, everything about it is incredibly irritating. It's curved, with very little flat surface at all. So if you want to attach a phone holder (because it's so damn slippery) or a plate for magnetizing it to stuff (since you can't put it in a grip without turning it off), good luck with that. It catches on everything because the edges aren't flush, and it will also start to fall off in short order because dirt gets under it and starts to degrade the sticker.
Sony updates are extremely overbearing and obnoxious. You can't dismiss them, and they're constant. It is endlessly pestering you about its updates (which are always huge, largely pointless, and put the phone out of commission for an hour). The only way to get rid of all the notifications that are filling up your list is to force-stop the app, which only works for a day or so, and then it's back again. And it'd be less annoying if it was a couple times a year, but it's CONSTANT. I've literally not gone longer than a week without getting a bunch of these un-dismissable update notifications crowding my bar.
The Sony audio settings have a mind of their own, and they really think they're your mother. You have to fight with the volume bar several times before it lets you turn it up past about half-way. It will keep stopping you with a pop-up a handful of times before you can increase the volume. Even after you've fought through it, it will then randomly reduce your volume again without your permission. There's no way of disabling this.
Taken together, all of these things make the phone really irritating to live with, despite its conceptually great spec sheet. As a user experience, this is definitely an inferior phone to others I've had from HTC, Samsung, etc. It feels like a phone that was designed for a YouTube unboxing video without any real attention to anyone having to actually use it for anything.
I've been living with it in resignation because there have simply not been any other small phones on the market. Even Xperia has started to lose its way -- their next "compact" phone is going to have a 5.5-inch screen.
But the other day, I became aware that there's a new iPhone SE with a 4.7-inch screen. I happily pre-ordered it and will be very pleased to finally get to sell this phone. I won't miss it.
If you want a small phone and you're on the fence, get the iPhone. It has a better processor with a design that's already time-tested (pretty sure the chassis is similar to the iPhone 8). And it's cheaper brand new than the XZ2 Compact is at 2 years old.
If you don't care about a small phone, there's no reason to even look at the XZ2 Compact. You have dozens of vastly superior options from a plethora of companies -- even for much less money.
I would say that if you absolutely refuse to get an iPhone, and you also absolutely refuse to get anything over 5 inches, this is probably, sadly, still your best choice in terms of specs. It's a good phone... conceptually. But honestly, only if you can get it at a deep discount. This phone is NOT worth $450. Don't even pay half that, if you're absolutely determined to get this phone despite all its issues.
