I wanted to love the Suunto 7…
As an industrial athlete, I planned to use the newly delivered Suunto 7 for fitness and adventure tracking. I’ve used other watches, but was excited to check out the 7 because of the outdoor reputation of this Finnish company. I’ve gotta say my first impression was “Wow”! Right out of the box, the quality and design excellence were evident. This watch was the black metal version with the black and yellow band. The watch had a good heft to it but was light enough not to be bothersome for trail running and mountain biking. It had a rugged appeal, yet looked high quality and sophisticated enough to wear out on social occasions if paired with a nice leather watchband. The AMOLED touch screen was big and bright and high-resolution. The fitness tracking features were bright, customizable and easy to read while working out or on a trail ride. I loved the customizable display! The provided watch band was thick yet flexible and just added to the overall perception of quality. I also loved the easy changeability of the watchband. During mountain biking, weigh-lifting and rowing sessions, I found the fitness tracking to be accurate (while wearing another device for comparison) with the heart rate, GPS breadcrumbs and altimeter being equal to or better than other products. These impressions were in comparison to high-end Garmin Fenix and Cascio Pro-Tek products to the budget-level T-Rex Pro from Amazfit.Like I said, right from the beginning, I loved the watch, but… the battery… BARELY lasted through 1 day… even after a full charge! On day 1, I used the GPS, which really depleted the battery while I was off-grid in the mountains during a 1 hour mountain bike ride. If I’d been on a whole day or half-day trip, the watch wouldn’t have lasted. Mind you, on day 2, I only had one weight-lifting and rowing session (with no GPS function used) and the watch went from 100% in the morning, down to single digit percentage by the end of the day. I used no other smartwatch features during this time other than notifications.Even loving everything else about the watch, I can’t rely upon a watch that I will have to charge throughout the day. It’s just unacceptable. I would think my Suunto 7 was defective; however, I’ve seen that others also commented on the battery life — so I’ll just call this a “design flaw”. I also found that downloading the Suunto app, the Google WearOS app, AND the Google Fit app was a bit cumbersome in the complexity, but I was willing to put up with it due to my good impressions of accuracy, design and quality. If Suunto could put out the same watch with an improved battery life, it would be a ROCK STAR. As it is and regretfully, the extremely poor battery life caused me to have to return it. Sorry Suunto!

    So I wanted a great looking smartwatch but didn't want to spend $2,000 on a Tag Heuer. Does the battery life sort of stink? Yes. Is the Google OS worse than Apple? Yes. Is it a great looking smartwatch with some nice features that warrants a $500 price tag? Absolutely. The sports stuff is great. The large screen is great. The way it looks is great. Style is great. Battery will get you through a day. Not quite 16 hours if you use the sports function. I have read all of the negative critiques on this watch and they don't hold much water. If you want sports and battery life only - get the other model. If you want a watch that has flawless functionally but doesn't look good - get the Apple.

    I believe this is the first Android watch to PROPERLY use the 2100 and it has a massive battery - result is that if I don't use it for sports I can easily get 2 "rest" days out of it. Unlike so many of my other Wear watches I'm no longer embarrassed after a full day where the battery would run out in the bar at 11pm! By the way, this is with ALL features on, including the display. If you want to extend further, turn off WiFi. If I add in to my day an hours exercise connected to my Polar H10 chest strap using Google Fit then I will go to bed with about 30% left in the first day.

    Like all optical HRM, it's crap and will often just think I'm dead mid-exercise.. It's way to slow to catch up with the initial start however, this isn't specific to Suunto, none of my watches Optical HRM have worked for me. I'm not just talking about Wear watches, even my Garmin Fenix 5 Sapphire would do the same.

    Suunto, for whatever reason, i suspect a commercial one, refuse to allow you to use external Bluetooth sensors with their app but, as I've already said, you can still use them with at least Google Fit and Endomondo and probably others.

    The screen at times can be slow to respond but, this is pretty much par for the course with Android Wear watches in my extensive experience. Sometimes just pressing the app button wakes it up and you're good to go. But the screen is AMAZING.

    I think Suunto KNOW they have the battery king and, the price is disproportionally high because of it. Value for money it is not but, if can afford it, then it's a beast of a watch because of the battery and screen.

    Edit: screen print attached. No sports today and WiFi off. Screen ALWAYS on.

    I love this watch, and the battery life is exactly what I was looking for. I had the Fossil Gen 5 for my Pixel 4XL, which I loved, but the battery life was terrible to say the least, so I exchanged it, and I'm glad I did. The battery on smartwatch mode will last you your whole day and into the next day. I am not sure how long the battery lasts if you use GPS or any of the sports modes/extra features, but the website says about 12 hours. I've seen some reviews saying the battery life is poor, but I've not ran into any issues with that, you just need to make sure you don't have everything turned on, or that you're not being notified of every little thing your phone is doing.

    One of my issues with this watch is the HR sensor. I have a sleeve tattoo on my left arm, and the sensors won't register my HR through my tattoos. This is an issue I have faced with every smart watch I've owned, even the Apple Watch Series 5 had this issue when I tested it.

    The watch band is a super soft and flexible silicone that is both stylish, and comfortable. I ended up switching it out for the Suunto 7 lime green silicone athletic band, just because I like my skin to breathe a little better than the solid silicone allows.

    There are not many stock watch faces for the Suunto 7 (I think 5), but you have the option to download non-Suunto watch faces from the Google Play Store. Suunto warns these will work, but only Suunto watch faces have been optimized for the Suunto 7. I will say, though, the Heat Map watch face on the Suunto 7 is my favorite watch face of any smart watch I've tried.

    This watch is pricey, and on par with the Gen 5, but with added sports features, better water protection, and a way better battery life. I don't regret my purchase at all, and I highly recommend the Suunto 7 if your budget allows.

    It doesn't matter how great the features are on this watch because you cannot freaking use it as a watch! You would expect in this modern day a watch would hold a charge for weeks at a time. Ok, so it's a smart watch and uses more power. Fine, it should at least last a full day.

    This watch doesn't even hold power for more than six hours in a day!

    Which, effectively, makes it useless.

    I bought this watch primarily as a fitness tracker. But the user interface doesn't appear to work. It constantly gets stuck on the *last* workout I did and will not respond to any user input, not pause, cancel, end, or anything else.

    I should send it back for a refund. This is an embarrassment of a product.

    The watch is absolutely awesome and looks great. I was debating between the Suunto 7 and the Garmin Fenix and I have to say that I'm very happy overall with the look and feel. Also the battery is not too bad contrary to a lot of comments I've seen. It will generally last 2 days without requiring a charge.

To download music on watch, you may need use Spotify. External heart rate belt can not be synced with watch. May be in future, a software update might solve this issue.
