For portable battery with 5000mah or less, the common form factor is the lipstick style cylindrical shape. While this form factor works and it's cost effective for manufacturer since it is just the shape of a typical rechargeable battery.
However, using the phone while charging will have this lipstick battery dangling which is somewhat inconvenient. PowerCore Slim 5000 is designed to solved this problem. For a relatively small and light battery, it's slim profile let's you stack with your phone so you can hold your phone and battery together with one hand while changing.
The PowerCore Slim 5000 comes in the typical nice Anker packing. It includes the battery, carrying pouch, Micro USB. Note that there is no lightning cable included despite the fact that they advertised this for use with Apple products.
**Build and design
The battery is about the size of a IPod Touch but thicker. The back has a matte finish making it nice to touch. The main surface is rubber with a few threads to prevent device from slipping when placed on top.
When holding the phone with the battery stacked, the smooth matte finish and the curve back of the battery makes it very easy to the hand. When piggybacking to a bigger phone such as a Galaxy Note Edge, it still relatively easy to hold and its still much better than using a lipstick battery which you cannot piggyback when charging. I definitely prefer this slim form factor over a lipstick style battery no battery what the phone size is.
In the front there is a USB for output and an microUSB port for input. There are 3 LEDs to indicate battery level and charging status. The power button lets you check on battery level.
**Performance
The battery works equally well on Android devices. While charging, current measures about 1.7-1.8 A max. This is pretty much the fastest you can charge for a non-quick charge charger (OEM or aftermarket chargers). In terms of capacity, I measured about 4100mah. This is roughly about charging my 3000mah rated Note Edge battery about 1.38 times.
We are talking about a battery efficiency of over 80% here. This is highly respectable as most decent battery only delivers 70% to 75% of it's rated capacity in real life.
Also, there is no heating issue with the battery when it's charging or being charged.
**Conclusion
The PowerCore 5000 slims has an excellent form factor and delivers 4100 mah . It combines a great design and excellent performance. This is definitely the best sub 5000mah external battery to date.

Conclusion: Great battery bank. In version 2 I would like to see some kind of micro suction pads or rubber on it so it will stick to the phone, and a set of VERY short cables (3 inches or less) to connect the battery bank to the phone. If Anker makes those changes and releases another version I will buy it in a heartbeat. For now, this battery bank is the best option I've found for a slim, highly portable battery bank.
Can something be beautiful AND functional? Why, yes, apparently it can! Charging up my phone from 20-30% brought it down one indicator light (33%), so looks like I could get about 2+ full charges for my phone before the battery pack runs out. Which is usually more than enough for a single day's phone usage. The charge time was also quick - seemed the same as when using the 2.1A wall charger, so I would assume the smart charge feature is charging the phone at maximum capacity.
Overall this is perfect for it's intended use, which is a lightweight external battery intended to give you a little extra juice on a daily basis. I've used this for a few weeks now and I have no complaints. I have a bigger battery backup that I bring on longer trips, but this is perfect for every day carry.
Top reviews from other countries
First, lets start with weight. An iPhone 6+ with no case weighs 6.2 oz, and this powerful little package weighs in at a mere 4.3 oz! Yes, it weighs almost 2 oz. less than an iPhone 6+! It stacks together nicely to easily fit in a back pocket, shirt/jacket pocket or small handbag. I love the rubberized matt black finish on this unit. It feels great in your hand due to size, 2 rounded edges, rubberized matt black coating and ridges on one face. It's only 2 1/2" wide x 4 7/8" long x 5/16" thick compared to an iPhone 6+ that's 6 1/4" long x 3" wide, so it's not only lighter it's smaller as well!
Mine came charged with 1 full LED out of 3. I fully charged it up and put it thru the paces running Pokemon Go with the iPhone 6+ screen on for 6 hours set at the maximum screen brightness that my phone could go! Those who play know it has to be the biggest battery drain out there right now - even more than watching videos. This thing drained thru all 3 LED's after 6 hours but left my phone battery with 100% charge! It only takes about 3 hours to charge it from zero LED's to full at 3 LED's.
After the Pokemon drain test, I recharged it and used it twice to charge the phone. Both times it averages 10% phone charge in 30 minutes, so in and hour and a half, with the screen off, I gained 30% battery back on my phone and still had 3 LED's. You can easily charge your phone at least twice with this charger before running out of juice.
Due to it's slim and portable size and total MAH rating, it was created to use to charge smaller devices like cell phones, iPods, and some portable gaming devices. It has one power port that takes a standard USB cable. The port to charge this is a standard micro USB, and Anker provides a short micro USB cable in the box. They also include a nice little bag, to keep it in. This charger will slowly charge a tablet, but can't hold enough juice to fully charge one. Anker makes some great larger MAH capacity portable chargers for your tablets, for less than $10 more, so why not match the right size chargers with the right devices.
I also recommend you use a short lightning or micro USB cable to charge your devices with any portable charger. The longer the cable, the more stored energy is wasted flowing through a longer cable to your device. It's also easier to stack and go with a short cable. I highly recommend the Anker PowerLine + 1 Foot Kevlar Fiber Coated Cable for durability, or other 1 foot long cable rather than using the standard 3 foot length cable that come with most cell phones and other devices.
Overall, I love the Anker PowerCore Slim 5000 Portable Charger and highly recommend it for anyone that doesn't want a dedicated power pack case but needs some super portable juice that lasts more than thru just 1 movie or a few hours of calls! This would be great for travel on long flights, beach time, cookouts/picnics, hiking, or camping when outlets just aren't around. I bought their 10,000MAH charger just last month but felt it was a little too fat and heavy to use with a phone on the go but perfect for a tablet. This thing amazed me on performance and size, and for the price you can't beat it! Top that off with Anker's high quality and stellar customer service, and your search for the best portable cell phone charger is over! Perfect gift for coworkers, family, or friends at any age! Even for those people that are hard to buy for, they will love this and use it over and over again!
Disclaimer: This product was provided to me, free of charge, for my fair and honest review. I have personally tested it with the results as stated above. I own several other Anker products, all of which I have purchased, and I have never been disappointed in their products or their customer service.
