With the ZF6 specs and design, I just went for it, not that into the camera and the selfie thing but having the whole screen for you without any notch, punch, drop... design failure was very tempting. So I went for it and think I can print myself a shirt that says "I survived the stupid notched phone era | 2017-2019".
Personally never understood why the push for edge to edge display if you are going to cut off part of it. No idea why. The idea of the motorized camera is worrying and only time will tell if the approach is correct. I think that just leaving an edge for the needed hardware is still the way to go. I think the camera will mostly stay where it is once the novelty passes, let's see.
What worried me the most with all the reviews was the screen, everybody was complaining of it not having an OLED screen and coming from one in the ZF4 Pro I was like.... but I must say that personally, sure there are better screens on devices that double the price of the ZF6 but this screen is great, colors can be as saturated as the OLED screen tends to be if you want, doesn't look washed, definition is great, I am very happy.
Phone is non bloated, I am running Nova as I do with every phone but everything in this device seems like a huge upgrade from the previous, device is great, have a flagship feeling, look and performance.
The only thing you need to consider is a better case than the provide one as it is just a solid shell and not silicone like the previous models (justified with the camera swiveling I guess) and that the phone is heavier than I expected (even that I expected it not being light due to the huge battery) Oh the battery life.... First phone I ever install everything for over a day without charging and battery was 47% when I started.
Hope that with time, it stays nice :-)
The snapdragon 855 processor (the same as in Samsung's $1000 flagships) is super fast, and the phone runs really smoothly. I don't do a lot of super processor-intensive stuff like mobile gaming, but I can have google maps open and displaying search results within 3-4 seconds, and browsing the internet with a bunch of tabs/apps open hasn't resulted in any noticeable slowdowns.
In terms of the battery, it depends on how much I use it, but I can generally get 1.5 - 2 days out of a single charge, and I've never had to recharge it during the day. This has included days of running maps while driving for several hours, watching a couple hours of Netflix, and browsing the internet/listening to spotify for a couple hours.
The operating system is a really clean android installation (the phone feels set up like a Pixel), and there's no annoying carrier or manufacturer bloatware, pre-installed facebook, or any of that crap. The few things included by ASUS are all simple (but nice) utilities that are kept fairly out of the way in Settings; things like a call recorder, screen recorder, custom sound equalizer, glove mode, custom google assistant button setup, etc.
The customizable google assistant button is a nice touch - I don't ever use google assistant, so I changed the button so that one tap opens the camera (only when the screen is on, so no accidental pocket-pictures get taken), a double-tap turns on the flashlight, and a long press toggles the screen auto-rotate on and off.
I don't use the selfie camera a ton, but it flips out quickly when I need it, and the 48 mp main camera takes great pictures. The 13 mp wide-angle lens pictures don't look as nice, but I've never had reason to use it. And it's really nice that there's no notch/punchout in the screen for a selfie camera. The flipping mechanism feels well made, and when it's folded down, the camera feels pretty solidly locked into place.
The LCD screen is nice - you can tell it's not quite as bright as an OLED screen, but even in bright sunlight, the screen is still easy to read. And since it's an LCD, it draws less power than an OLED screen would and makes the most of the phone's huge battery.
The only issue I've had with the phone is that I don't believe it can currently do wifi calling or texting. This is a bit of a problem for me, since I usually rely on wifi calling/texting if I'm travelling outside the US, but since it has a dual sim setup, I think I can just buy a local sim card and use that.
